Stan Murmur Stephen Colbert, 2009
‘An art teacher has been suspended from his school, after footage of him painting with his buttocks on a TV show appeared on YouTube. Stephen Murmer – who paints with his bottom, as a self-described ‘butt-printing artist’, under the name of Stan Murmur – was suspended for five days while authorities investigate the video. He could also face longer-term, unpaid suspension.

‘The video comes from an appearance on the US TV show Unscrewed With Martin Sargent, in which Murmer appeared in a disguise, and demonstrated his bum art. It was uploaded to YouTube in March, but apparently only came to the school’s attention recently. Murmer, from Monacan High School in Virginia, has a technique which involves coating his buttocks – or when he requires greater detail, his penis – with paint, then pressing them on the canvas.

‘Kent Willis, of the American Civil Liberties Union, which is representing Murmer, said: ‘As a public employee, he has constitutional rights, and he certainly has the right to engage in private legal activities protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution.’’

Narcissister Ass Vag, 2008
‘In her seminal work Ass Vag, Narcissister’s radical feminist ontology posits the indiscreet jewels of a complacently sex saturated society against the unruly dreaming of post-porn postmodernity. Dawning black and magenta homespun genitalia of gargantuan proportions, Narcissister plays off of the folkloric myth of the Vagina Dentata – fashioning an oversize ass and vagina pair wired to pleasure only itself. Marrying aggressive eroticism and bawdry humor through puppetry, the work forces the viewer belly up against the coldly oscillating desire of dominant narrative form. With a dyi soundtrack layering rap artist JDilla over samples of Narcissister’s own voice coaxing, crooning and didactically instructing herself into the highest pitches of pleasure, this piece turns sexual objectification on its heels occupying positionalities which are multiple, fluid and polyvocal.’

Boy isolates an image from media technology in the early years of its domestication. ‘The sculptures are a permanent fixture hidden in the back garden of Futura, an art museum. The gigantic, naked lower halves of two bodies are bent over and lean against the side of the building, revealing their rather gaping orifices. Viewers are invited to climb the ladder leading to the macroscopic derrieres and stick their heads inside the behemoth butts. But rather than being greeted with a slurry of some sort of sculpted internal sludge, as one might expect to find within an artistic anus, people will instead see a television screen that plays a video of two Czech politicians spoon feeding each other to the sounds of Queen’s “We Are the Champions.”’

ARAI Shin-ichi Happy Japan!, 1999
‘ARAI Shin-ichi is an established Japanese performance artist who has been working around the world since the 1980s, especially in Asia and Western Europe. His performances are direct, clear and obvious — perhaps too obvious at first glance. Recently, at the 4th Open Art Festival which took place in Changchun, China, September 2003, Arai performed “Happy Japan!,” a well known performance work which is his signature piece having been performed more than ten times since 1999.

‘For the performance, Arai dressed soberly in a dark green suit which, he tells us, is the uniform of Japan Overseas Cooperate Volunteers, a body of young people under 40 to propagate Japanese civilization around the world. And the honorary president of the Organization is the Emperor. In a clear, unemotional speech, he introduces his audience to the book he holds in his hands, “War theory,” a controversial comic book that has sold a most a million copies.

‘He then takes off his clothes, keeping only a small yellow “Pikachu Pokemon” fig leaf on his genitals, and squats on a square white canvas on the floor. While singing the Japanese national anthem, he presses a plastic tube of Riquitex containing red paint from just below his buttocks, as if excreting red human waste. Using his bare buttocks on the “waste,” he paints a full but irregular rising sun in the middle of the white canvas that turns out to be a copy of the Japanese national flag, which he later hangs on the wall. He then tears out random pages of the comic book, giving some to the audience, and stuffing others into his mouth after reading out a few lines. He chews them, shouting “Happy Japan.” At the same time, the accumulation of paper in his mouth blocks his emotional speech, making his voice hoarse before it disappears entirely inside his throat. The performance ends when a last, almost inaudible “Happy Japan” emerges from his suffocating mouth, while tears run down his pain-distorted face.’

p.s. Hey. The excellent fiction writer Paula Bomer interviewed me about ‘I Wished’ for the Full Stop site. It turned pretty well, I think, and it’s here if anyone’s interested. ** David Ehrenstein, My pleasure, of course. Raymond Durgnat: late, great indeed. ** Misanthrope, That does sound packed. Well, then ‘Spiderman’ sounds perfect for a plane flight. The longer, i.e. more time consuming, and mindless the better. You could have had omicron, man. How trendy. If only the changing-of-the-years day wasn’t just another day with a pretentious name. ** David, Madrid, nice. You get around, man. Thanks. The booster shot was easy-peasy, thankfully. Happy week’s outset. ** Dominik, Hi, D!!!! How did your blog day off pan out? Yay! I know it was a big sacrifice on your love’s part to agree to that Disneyland trip, but I swear he’ll have more fun than if I poured molten lead into his anus if it’s the last thing I do. Love explaining to me why I found this so hilarious that I listened to it three times in a row yesterday, G. ** David Fishkind, Hi. I do quite want to see that ‘Candyman’ remake or whatever it is, and I keep forgetting to watch it. ‘LNiS’ is still on my horizon. I am most intrigued now, thanks to you. I have another friend with excellent taste who swore by it as well. I got distracted last night and watched a 2 1/2 hour documentary about the history of LA’s Magic Mountain amusement park instead. (Only for amusement park diehards like me.) I’m about a little over halfway through ‘The Children of Zoar’, and it’s just gorgeous. Your writing is very beautiful. In the great way, I mean. I dislike ‘beautiful’ writing. So, thank you. Excuse my ignorance, but do you have a book of your fiction (or any other writing) out? I’m noticing that my brain needs an inordinate amount of green tea and coffee lately to behave like its usual self. ** _Black_Acrylic, Hi, Ben. My booster shot was smooth as silk unless it springs something on me today. I hope your tutor gives you everything you need, if you need anything. ** l@rst, Hey, man. Yeah, no, it was amazing to follow in the footsteps (voiceprints?) of the likes of Malkmus, Pajo, etc.Field Notes: I’ll have a look at what they are. Aw, thanks, buddy. I hope everything you eat today tastes like your all-time favorite food. ** Brian, Hey, Brian. Oh, wow, you have a friend who likes Giraudon! That’s pretty rare over in your neck of the planet, I think. That’s great. I think you’ll like her maybe. I just got some new masks that supposedly cause one’s glasses not to fog up, and we’ll see. Because … yes, so annoying. Films that are disasters on ice can be a lot of fun. Weirdly, my film stuff might’ve taken an unexpected turn towards the brighter yesterday. Fingers crossed. Amazing that ‘Phantom’ has been there all this time. I haven’t seen it. I’ve heard some of the songs, and … yikes. The cool thing about ten year olds is that they can watch utter garbage and get life changing things out of it. They’re very lucky. Meaning you/we were very lucky. I hope your little depression has dematerialised entirely now. The booster was easy. The possible upswing on the film front helped perk up yesterday. So it wasn’t bad. Today’s still a blank. How was yours? ** Steve Erickson, Hi, Steve. I feel fine, thanks. I haven’t had any side effects from the booster at all, not even a sore arm. So much so that I’m almost worried they gave me a placebo. ** Okay. I hope y’all like butts because there are a whole bunch of them just north of here. See you tomorrow.

Glad your booster went OK… big hug to you… I have to get a pointless 2nd day travel co-video test later on… pointless as it is being scrapped on Sunday here…. so a waste of 50 pounds…

This post reminds me of my first grudge fuk….. this guy who always screwed me, pissed me off on this one occasion… after apologising he said I could fuk him… I got rock hard and pounded his butt… hating him every minute… yet enjoying myself considerably…. he was very uncomfortable for a time afterwards… and wouldn’t let me do it again….

This other guy who I was with for a time… a good looking American… once grudge fucked me… he was angry at this bloke he’d had an argument with and took it out on me…. without any lube he shoved two fingers right inside me… I went like a dog with worms around the bedroom in agony…. he said sorry… but I could see in his face he wasn’t….

    Xx

    Hi!!

What an excellent collection today. I very seriously adore Mark Morrisroe’s work.

I’m afraid I’m gonna be pretty boring here, but I spent most of yesterday working. Well, working and reading “In Cold Blood”. (Yeah, I’m extremely late to each and every party in life, haha.) I’m also thinking about getting my booster shot – how was your trip? Are you feeling fine?

If it’s any consolation, I found it hilarious too. These lyrics and these voices are just perfect together. Thank you so much, haha! Professor love getting suspended after footage of him painting with his buttocks on a TV show appears on YouTube, Od.

The Man Ray idea was used by Coil for their 1984 Scatology album. That LP contains the track Tenderness Of Wolves, prefiguring the title of your own book of poetry. Wonder if they were early adopters?

It was good to get feedback from my writing tutor last night. The class returns next Thursday so I’m looking forward to getting a bit of structure back to my week again.

Ah it’s a film, should’ve done my research.

Hahaha… I didn’t know Beuys also got into the act, wow.

Good to hear the booster went smoothly, and you’re not suffering much discomfort.

Saw the new Del Toro. Solid entertainment, but not close to my favorites of his.

    Hi Dennis,

Glad to see Narcissister appearing among these butts! I saw her perform live once in the middle of a Cindy Sherman exhibition. Didn’t Yoko Ono do a movie about butts too? Her stuff is sometimes hard to find online (and I’ve heard she’s quick with lawsuits), so I’m not surprised it isn’t included.

I’ve got a newish movie (it was actually made in 2020) that I just made public after its lackluster attempt at a festival run. I’m not doing a big push for it because I’m a bit bashful about my own rather limited acting abilities. It was made while LA was first in lockdown, and some friends and I wanted to make something despite those strict shooting conditions. I like the movie when I can ignore the fact that I’m onscreen for half of it, and I especially like the ending which features a great piece of music my friends recorded for the project. Anyway, here it is for anyone interested: https://vimeo.com/467549387

BTW – I don’t think I’ve mentioned, but I really loved I Wished. Some of the things you wrote about George reminded me of a friend of mine who also seems doomed and forgotten by most of the people who ever knew him. It was an unexpectedly emotional experience, which I appreciated all the more since it’s not my usual response to your books. Great work!

You’re lucky to have dodged the vaccine’s more unpleasant effects.

Have you heard Rxk Nephew? His song “american tterroristt” got a lot of attention last year, but he drops a song on YouTube almost every day, as well as releasing more than 20 mixtapes in 2021. He’s the first rapper I’ve heard in ages who seems like a real outsider artist, with a flow that constantly races against itself, freestyles consisting of bizarre conspiracy theories and rants about religion, disses of famous rappers who have probably never heard of him, outrageous boasting and, unfortunately, a fair amount of homophobia, transphobia and claims that he beats women. (He reminds me a lot of Ol’ Dirty Bastard or even JPEGMAFIA.) His mixtape SLITHERMAN ACTIVATED is well worth a listen.

Does the availability of public funds for French filmmaking make producers any less venal? I’m happy to hear that your movie may be moving ahead.

Knowing the story behind it, the Stephen Colbert painting is much more compelling.

    Hey D,

I present you Butts On Things .

I ran into this artist at a craft show in town. Not pictured on that page is a 20 Sided Die with a butt, I got a bunch of stickers of that for my D&D nerd friends.

Nice interview in Full-Stop. I’d never seen that page and I already discovered some new books I wanna check out through it.

I just finished The Emigrants by WG Sebald. I really enjoyed it, beautiful prose, but I’m not sure if it’s my brain lately but it was like it was written in invisible ink. All the stories and digressions disappeared the moment I read them. I don’t mind that. Though my brain is a sieve lately. I’m gonna read something light then check out Rings of Saturn. Not sure if you’re a fan of his. I’m gonna do my 4th read of Gravity’s Rainbow with a friend who is just starting to get into all the FAT books of the 20th century. I really look forward to it. I remember my brain being so re-arranged when I first read it at age 19. I was working at the Harvard Medical School Library and I can picture myself sitting outside that horrific brutalist building on a summer lunch break eating some bad greek pizza.

    Okey doke, see ya!

    Hey, Dennis,

That Man Ray piece you open this wonderful post with is one of my favorites ever. It graces the cover of my edition of Sade’s “120 Days”. The rest of the artworks here offer similarly excellent tributes to or evocations of this loveliest of subjects. Yes, my firmly U.S. friend likes Giraudon! He’s much more well-read and -viewed than I, and his recommendations typically hit the target for me, so the two of you in tandem suggests powerful things for Giraudon indeed. Wow, I’m going to need to get myself some of those non-fogging glasses now too. If they work, that is. That makes me so tremendously happy to hear re: the sun peeking through the clouds for your film. Hoping that positive developments only continue to accrue in the weeks and months ahead. “Phantom” is indeed garbage (trash is my preferred term here); I think it occupied the same place in my life that “Twilight” did for many teenage girls of my generation. I do feel lucky for what it gave me, though, you’re right. And even though it doesn’t have a fraction of the same effect over me anymore (certainly not the music!), it was extremely pleasant to be back in a theatre. Pretty good way to spend today, anyway. Hope your blank check of a Thursday was filled in with a million bucks in scripty handwriting or something. (I think this metaphor got out of my grasp.)
