Hi Dennis, glad everything went so well. Your jetlag is legendary. I’ll do a magic ritual to make it disappear that involves snapping my fingers and blinking aggressively. Gone? Phew. Um I have been good. I’m in the process of trying to open a queer art space/gallery and cafe so mostly trying to see if I can get funding in place and that is taking up a lot of my time, but is going well and I always do well when focusing on a new project. I sort of feel like it’s extra important to have these physical spaces with the way that everything seems at the moment. The premiere sounds like it went well and how was the travel?

I got my extension on my dissertation, so I’ve just over 2 weeks until it’s due. I probably time managed poorly, but I’ve had a busy year. Going to work in the final chapter today, hopefully get that done over the weekend, and then it’s just cleaning it up, adding sources and references to academic texts, and a bit of polishing. I have an exam next friday that i havent read the books for yet, which is starting to freak me out, but at the same time it’s a 5 credit module and I’m pretty good at bullshitting in exams.
If you and Zac are ever interested in setting up a screening in Ireland, I have a lot of film people that would definitely be able to help in getting a screening done in Dublin.

I’ve recently watched Hustler White by your friend (is he your friend) Bruce LaBruce. I thought it was fun, I’m always up to an exploitation movie. I also watched ‘Fruits of Passion’ and, as always, felt disturbed by how evil Klaus Kinski looked — and was! Some stories, jeez… How you feel about him?
I also watched a very sad movie called ‘Forever a Woman’. It made me cry a lot and I never cry watching anything, I think the last time I cried with a movie I was 12 maybe. Do you cry watching movies? I mean, it felt good, you know… It makes you remember you are a person.
I’ve also finished a Brazilian book called ‘The House of the Fortunate Buddhas’. The author says that he received an anonymous tape that contained confessions of an old nymphomaniac and he just transcribed it. I’m not sure if I believe it, but it’s a great book, maybe you’d like it.
I went through a short phase obsessed with Diana Ross and The Supremes this month. I’ve been listening to a lot of black female groups from the 60s now. I like them, The Chiffons and The Vandellas too. ‘Heatwave’ is one of my favourite songs ever.

The “Death in Venice” fan in Emdash’s Guestbook is great too – I’m secretly hoping that guy’s real and not an invention, because that’s a very unique connection to make – unless Thomas Mann has a huge following on these sites.
All great on my end – lots of work on my dissertation left to do, but it’s all going great. 12 days to go (!), but all on track to finish by then. That yaoi/BL videogame I’ve been playing is continuing to be interesting, if a little bit of a slog at this point – I finished the route with the character I found interesting/attractive, so now I’m just trudging through the rest to get to the (apparently) amazing last bit of the game. I’m at the studio now, i’m participating in this thing called Oslo Open next weekend where artists open up their studios, so i have to get my studio in showable shape. It’s a huge mess right now so it’s a big job. I’m also getting a visit from a pretty big deal curator as part of it so it’s stressful but good:)) On saturday we are throwing a bachelorette party for my friend (it’s called möhippa in swedish (she’s swedish), pronounced m-uh-hip-pah, it’s a great word. a bachelor party is a svennsexa). and next weekend they’re getting married at city hall and throwing an informal party. Plus some big application deadlines coming up so it’s a very busy couple of weeks ahead. But it’s good as long as i can stay atop any potential anxiety.

Were I not feeling so flat I’d give the escorts a longer survey but I’m feeling pretty tired, so. I’ll say that my usual criticisms – sort of silly hair, startling skinniness – apply. Hi Dennis, good to hear from you again. Hope LA was a nice time for you. It’s been a pretty good past month, but right now not a whole bunch of specific incidents are springing to mind. I got another story finished and up on my substack, which I’m kind of satisfied with. If the rare mood to watch a film strikes me, Room Temperature’s definitely up on the hypothetical list. I imagine Stanton will have not exhibits in the foreseeable future, maybe, hopefully. I’ve no jet lag to complain of, but that’s not stopped me from feeling pretty ehhh, deflated. In the past month, I’ve read Guide, Period, I Wished, and The Sluts, and I’m reading Marbled Swarm at the moment – thank you very much for writing them, they have made/make for good reading.
I’ve been busy studying – 3 hours a day minimum for abot a week now. Which is probably the main reason for my ehh-ness. I have my first A Level paper in less than a month, so I’m just trying to make sure I know all my stuff, but also that I don’t have a breakdown. I’ve been trying a number of things to try and wind down. Today, I’ve been trying to make paper cranes. They’re of varying quality.
Will be driven down to extended family in due course, and have a few days in Edinburgh next week to check out the university and city. Found some new music I like, which is always good.
There’s probably stuff I’ll remember to bring up the moment I comment, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles. After a week at my parents’ house, I returned to New York today. I feel calmer after a meeting with our banker this morning, but I need to make arrangements for my parents’ cremations, which is the last thing I feel up to doing right now. I saw my mom in the hospital several times during the trip, but only once was she awake.
I watched THE SHROUDS on my laptop during the train ride home. It opens in the U.S. this weekend. Have you seen it? I found it quite baffling.
Hey! The Sparks albums you named are all favourites of mine too! I would also add ‘No. 1 in Heaven’, though. ‘Indiscreet’ is on some days my favourite, so glad you like that one. I think that album is a masterpiece. I have this assignment where I have to hand in twenty or so poems and I’m actually going to call it ‘Without Using Hands’ after the song on that album. ‘Angst in My Pants’ and ‘Lil Beethoven’ rule, no I haven’t seen them live, I really need to. They are playing the Eventim Apollo (formerly the Hammersmith Odeon) in June and I don’t think it’s sold out yet so I’m seriously considering it. Anyway I could go on about the Maels, that’s why I’m making a post about them, because I just want to go on and on about it and find an excuse to do something with my obsession. Writing is going well, thanks for asking. The novel that I’m writing for my dissertation only calls for 7,500 words in the assignment but I’m keeping working on it so that I can actually do something with it outside of university. It’s the sort of thing where I work on it in brief intense spurts and have to get into that rhythm to really do anything good. Anyway, I’ve had to pause a lot of other creative things for now due to all of the assignments, but even after next week when most of them are due in I’ll continue to work on this, because the other novel I’m working on is something I really need to put to the side for now. It’s a very emotionally taxing process and I’m just so confident in this current project that I’m going to focus my main energies on that.
I’m re-reading ‘Infinite Jest’ right now which I first read in my early teens and then sort of dismissed Wallace later on as a Jonathan Franzen type writer who I was an idiot for ever liking. There’s a weird thing about the performative hatred of this book. It’s weird. So I went back to it to finally review what I think without people screaming in my ear about ‘the sorts of people who read this book’. And yeah, he’s pretty great, certainly on his own wavelength. In terms of American Postmodernism I personally gravitate more towards Pynchon and Gaddis because they are more esoteric and mysterious, but the kind of OCD attention to detail in ‘IJ’ is sort of esoteric in its own way. I do think that it’s really terrible to compare him to Franzen. Anyway, the whole thing about alienating anyone who reads a certain thing is one of my pet peeves, and of course, I know you have generalisations so you probably know what I mean.

Congratulations on what sounds like a very successful premiere of ‘RT’. The reviews I’ve read on Letterboxd are really, really positive! My month was pretty good, all in all. I watched a lot of films, of course. On Fridays, I’ve been picking up my seven-year-old niece after school and ‘babysitting’ her for a few hours. She’s kind of a terror, but I can sort of manage if we play games or we watch this show she’s seen 500 times called ‘Henry Danger’. Only five more Fridays of that to go, haha. Oh, and I finally convinced my bf to hire a gardener/landscaper! I hope your jet lag has been attenuated, if not eradicated, by the time you read this. Did you satisfy any American food cravings? Lately, things have been looking up on the theatre front. Took part in a 48 Hour Short Play Festival as a writer (writing a play overnight is a challenge), and have a part in a staged reading in July!

My Warsaw film has been rejected from several more festivals, so I’m focusing on finishing the phone footage collage film for my next round of submissions. I just learned that the language spoken in ancient Carthage was very close to Hebrew, because Carthage started as a Phoenician colony. The Romans almost totally obliterated Carthaginian language and culture, so it’s potentially fertile ground for making shit up. I’ve kept going with the dance, and went to the workshop of Rina Schenfeld, a star pupil of Martha Graham who is still performing and choreographing at age 86.

It’s been a year since my Paris visit and my Francophilia has just kept growing. I’d just want to be a full-time flâneur and commit to speaking as much French as possible.

I’m in Taipei for a few days. The trip has gone fairly well, a few bummer moments, no major problems. I did see a couple interesting shows in Hong Kong, neither strictly speaking part of Art Basel. There was a retrospective of Hoo Mojong, one of the first modernist Chinese woman painters, whom I’d never heard of. She lived in Spain and Brazil in the ’50s, obviously very unusual for Chinese women of the time, and then in Paris for decades. Her work reminds me a bit of Philip Guston, figurative, blocky and almost abstract, but she also does this interesting thing with negative space that I don’t think Guston does.
The other show I haven’t mentioned pairs Yasumasa Morimura and Cindy Sherman, nice concept. I would have picked different Morimura pieces and hung the show differently, but that’s me in my pickier moments.
