I really love that era of games when it was a new form, and it wasn’t dependent on competing with blockbuster films and TV shows for big bucks, and actual artists made them and released them through small indie venues. Which still happens, as you said, but there was a more extreme kind of experimentation going on in a general way back then. When I think about some of these early PC games, it blows my mind that they were released at all much less were the games that all the smart people were playing.
