Time on this blog is so weird, maybe because I tend to force more than day’s worth stuff into each daily post. Time was really strange on film shoot because, like, we’d be shooting a scene that will be maybe 10 seconds or something long in the film, but we would need to shoot it over and over to get it right, and that would take hours. I can’t even play ‘Chopsticks’ on a piano anymore, ha ha. No, love protected (me) from Zelda, for at least now. Is that fan fiction a real thing? I did in fact tell Amy you love her work, and I asked which of her books she would recommend, and she said one of the last three, meaning ‘Dearest Creature’, ‘Scattered at Sea’, or ‘Index of Women’. Very interesting editing question. Well, our films are very carefully structured and composed when they’re in script form. And the shots are almost all storyboarded. So we have a pretty clear idea about how and what we want to shoot. When we shoot, the camera angles and scene lengths and how the performers embody the characters is very alive and fluid, but otherwise we’re manifesting what we had already planned. So, shooting is more like coloring in the film than a beginning, per se. And the editing is basically reconciling what we had originally imagined with what the footage itself presents, so we’re building what we planned while looking for particularly amazing (to us) manifestations and accidents and things in the material that asks us to alter our plans for the benefit of the film. So, it’s not so much like each aspect of the process is a start-over but rather a mutation or something? I guess it’s hard to describe. But thank you so much for asking. I’ll be able to say more, if you want, once we’re actually in the editing phase, hopefully in a week or so at the latest. Expensive, yes, but luckily post-production is a whole lot less expensive than the shoot, or, god, I sure hope so. ** _Black_Acrylic, ‘Mala Noche’ is nice: Gus finding out what he wants to make and still searching for it within the film itself.
