Torus Summer of Love
‘I always want my music to feel nostalgic, even if it doesn’t have any direct references /samples. It’s a really great tool for the audience to project personal experiences onto the music, which allows them to create a personal bond with the compositions. I forced myself to only sample music that already has this feature, huge pop songs distilled to their absolute melancholic essence, turned into dynamic ambient soundscapes on the threshold of recognizability.’ — Torus
________
Guck IDGAG
‘Uncoiling and recoiling around an ever-shifting rhythmic core, listening to Guck feels like attending a show where you’re the sole audience member. The band’s exquisite chemistry is matched only by their sonic density. Through synths, drums, bass, guitars, and vocals, the band seems to chart the entire history of noise rock. From the junkyard space punk of Pere Ubu, MX80 Sound, and Chrome to the squealing intensity of sasscore, and crushing grooves of post-hardcore. Yet tracing the forebearers only hints at glints of what Guck are doing. Glimpses of recognisable sights are swallowed into the ever-engulfing mass of the band’s whirring hurricane.’ — Devon Birse
______________
Parasite Nurse live @ Black Lace
‘Parasite Nurse is Samantha Hernandez. Established in New York City in 2019 as a harsh noise project, an array of sonic disciplines have been incorporated and studied over time such as cut up noise, sound collage, spoken word and ambient soundscapes.’ — Discogs
______________
Pain Magazine Violent God
‘Pain Magazine is a new project born from the meeting of post-hardcore trio Birds in Row and industrial techno duo Maelstrom & Louisahhh. Combining raw guitars and electronic textures, the group explores themes of power, belief, and transformation through intense sound and uncompromising lyrics. Formed during a spontaneous studio session, Pain Magazine brings together two worlds to create something bold and unfiltered.’ — Humus Records
______________
Zaidin Van Zyl Attention
‘Zaidin Van Zyl is a 16 year old artist who emerged onto the Perth music scene. Through his music, Zaidin reflects on past experiences and feelings such as childhood, identity and romantic feelings. This is evident through his newest single ‘Attention’ discussing things such as fear of intimacy and commitment while exploring a new indie rock sound.’ — Unearthed High
______________
Muscle Carpenter
‘Muscle is a Baltimore-based hardcore trio making sharp, anxious, deeply physical music. Their Bandcamp bio calls them the “ABBA of no wave” — a joke, but also somehow pretty accurate. Muscle sits comfortably alongside more conventional punk and hardcore acts, but pushes sonically and conceptually into more unstable territory.’ — Sorry State
______________
7038634357 Square Heart
‘Up until this point, Neo Gibson’s music has been primarily self-released on small-batch CD-R’s and performed in intimate settings. Synthesized and recorded entirely on their computer, Neo Seven is their first vinyl record, and perhaps their seventh release depending on where you begin amidst their prolific and fluid output. Within a runtime of just over thirty minutes, Neo Seven contains a spare, beautiful, and raw journey through the artist’s emotive, psychologically-charged ambient songwriting.’ — les presses du réel
______________
SANGUISUGABOGG Abhorrent Contraception
‘Sanguisugabogg is a brutal death metal juggernaut from Ohio, known for their slamming riffs, guttural vocals, and unrelenting violence on stage.’ — kavka.be
______________
Camilla Sparksss Backflip
‘Camilla Sparksss is a Swiss-Canadian electro-punk artist combining raw energy, heavy beats, turntables and percussive vocals.’ — festivalcite
______________
Nobukazu Takemura neri
‘Nobukazu Takemura immediately reveals that he has retained his sense of wonder, evident in the unexpected turns of his melodies, unpredictable vocal passages, and unconventional instrumentation in his electroacoustic arrangements. This idiosyncrasy aroused the interest of Yo La Tengo and Steve Reich in the 1990s, and he has since collaborated with and produced remixes for a long list of artists.’ — hhv-mag
______________
Patriarchy New Way
‘Los Angeles’ Patriarchy’s lyrics and live shows have been something of a talking point since the band’s real emergence with 2022’s The Unself. In fact, it’s not uncommon for conversations about the project made up of Actually Huizenga and AJ English to revolve entirely around their enfant terrible stage personas and often provocative lyrics, without ever actually touching on their music at all. Which is honestly a shame, because as evidenced by their new LP Manual for Dying, the band’s presentation isn’t covering for a lack of substance. Yeah, Patriarchy gleefully push buttons left and right, and the LP’s tone ranges from cheeky to downright unnerving, but it’s also a collection of good songs that pull in elements of industrial rock, darkwave and synthpop in clever fashion.’ — alex

Läuten der Seele Wir Zwei Allein
‘Läuten der Seele translates as “ringing of the soul” – a title that proves apt as Schoppik releases his latest album under the moniker. Ominous one moment, light-limbed and spiritually transcendent the next, the fourteen tracks possess the quality of reverberations dredged up from the deepest recesses of human thought, form and experience.’ — Ed Power

p.s. Hey. ** Charalampos, It’s kind of vaguely raining here. The CdC review is positive, and so I like it. The Catherine Breillat interview book does interest me, but maybe not enough to buy it, I’m not sure. One of the preset rules of ‘My Loose Thread’ was to write the first draft quickly to get a rushing, thoughtless quality, but then I rewrote and fiddled with it for three years. ** Jack Skelley, I love that Padgett called his Collected book ‘Very Collected Poems’, it’s so him. I’m going to just miss that LA Killian reading, damn. Taylor can contact me if he wants to talk about Michael, sure. La Cabana! Good old! Is Pancho’s Tacos still there? How did the El Cid shebang pan out? And what’re we reading for Sunday? Mountain lion hug, me. ** _Black_Acrylic, Hey, Ben. Wow, about your mom relieving herself of your childhood home. It was mildly traumatic when my mom sold ours at a certain point. It still feels wrong that I don’t have the keys to it. ** Dominik, Hi!!! My pleasure, as ever. There’s an old American saying ‘Don’t count your chickens until they’re hatched’ that’s kind of stupid but sensible. About the reviews. I think wallop is ultimately too cartoony a word to be used without provoking a chuckle, or that’s love’s current assessment. There’s a little patch of nature in the middle of my building’s vestibule that’s pretty sad and could use a boost if new gilded gnome love needs a home away from home. Love turning into a chair made of whatever human teeth are made of, G. ** Carsten, Didn’t know Roger Deakins made photos, and I guess that explains why. Nathaniel Mackey has a great brain, that’s for damn sure. There’s a newish huge book of this stuff that I need to get. ** Steve, Urgh. The French postal delivery guys do that all the time. They’ll even say they tried to deliver something but no one was home when I was home all day. Sorry iow. Tasty sounding new track, natch. Sort of like in the States, whatever further reviews the film gets probably won’t appear until the release day, the 26th. I know Les Inrockuptibles is writing about it because they did a photo shoot with me and Zac. Mm, no, I don’t know of further Killian books. Hopefully ‘Shy’ will finally, finally get reprinted. Everyone, Steve has reviewed the much ballyhooed new Rosalia album, and go see what he thinks here. ** jay, Ho ho, jay. Me too. Hopes are high. I have a bit of chest congestion for some reason, but otherwise I’m good. You too, I ‘pray’. ** HaRpEr //, I’m down with the cheekiness too. I don’t know CBT, I’ll look it up. I suppose it’s true that routines can be grounding. I forget I have lots of daily routines, and then I recognise them and want to break free and experiment, but then I don’t. Strange. I do feel a fair amount of trust in Death Grips, so fingers crossed. ** Laura, Hi. I’ll probably have to ask Zac to help me with the tech stuff. He’s good at that. I just get easily confused and think ‘fuck it’. Let me check about what’s going on with ‘Shy’. I would be surprised if a reprint isn’t in the works. I think maybe I even heard somewhere that Semiotext(e) is going to put it out? It’s very, very rare that I totally hate anything. Total hate is really huge. Strongly dislike, on the other hand, for sure. Can’t imagine that’ll happen with you. It takes a lot to piss me off. Aw, thanks about the George prose. You lived within driving distance of Charleville? Wow. In which direction? There’s a famous school of puppetry there. That’s the only other thing I know about it. Mm, I don’t have a copy of ‘Illuminations’ here, so I don’t know. Maybe ‘Vagabonds’? George wasn’t a big reader. I think I remember him liking Pynchon, but I don’t know which book(s). Love back and day sweetness too. ** Okay. Today I’ve made one of my gigs featuring some music I’ve been into to one degree or another of late, and there you go. Test it? See you tomorrow.

I’m always intrigued by what 7038634357 is up to and Square Heart does really hit the spot.
My friend Stephen is the SB part of SB&C, the electronic duo “laying low amongst the stone circles of the Scottish Highlands.” I sprung for their new 12″ which I’m hoping is in the post, but it can also be heard here via their Bandcamp.
Hey Dennis,
Did you end up going to the Palais du Tokyo? In any case, I’m up for seeing something from that extensive art menu if the mood takes us.
I was interviewed about Ssnake Press by Worms magazine and ended up trumpeting your virtues at one point. Here it is if anyone wants to take a look:

Ok back to my final proofread of Mr Gluck before placing it in the hands of the printing gods. How nerve wracking..
Bon weekend to you

Mountain Lion Den: Panchos Tacos moved (several years ago) a few blocks away on Stinkin’ Lincoln (as my Mom used to call it). But a friend told me this week it is now closing for good. Like lots of places. Pleeze, Food Gods, never close La Cabana!!! Also, Food Gods, Please explain the mystery of Tito’s Tacos popularity. Lily’s El Cid throwdown rocked. I read from my work-in-(slow)-progress. I was freeking and eeking but peeps seemed to like it. 🙂 Sunday Reading: I had intended for the group to consume my XRAY roundup on new books and talk about those… But, heck, I’ll also send a slice out of one of them today. Jackalope hugs…
Hi!!
I’ve never heard that idiom before. The Hungarian version is “Ne igyunk előre a medve bőrére,” which roughly translates to “Let’s not drink to the bear’s hide in advance.” The chickens make more sense, haha.
I agree with love about “wallop.”
I think love would love to be the pride and joy of that tiny pocket of nature. (Garden gnomes are a huge thing here. Most gardens are full of them. It’s funny but also a bit astonishing because a lot of people don’t seem to treat them as jokes – they’re serious decorative elements.)
I need that chair. Love teaching people the difference between an en dash and an em dash, even if they’re bored to tears by his explanation, Od.
A few days ago, I spoke with Taylor about Michael, and he was a delight. I hope the book he’s planning will come out in the near future. And Michael is endlessly fascinating.
Saw your FB post about RT screening in NY: awesome, congratulations!
Yeah, I was kinda shocked at how pedestrian Roger Deakins’ photography is, given some of his stunning work in film. Did you know Bruce Gilden’s work before? I’d never heard of him until recently & now I’m hooked, as evidenced by his presence in Duende Day.
What new Nathaniel Mackey book is that? My next read of his is a piece about Robert Duncan’s Vietnam War poetry vis-à-vis the Soninke story-poem Gassire’s Lute, from the collection “Paracritical Hinge”. Gassire’s Lute is, to me, the duende artist’s self-portrait par excellence, so I’m very intrigued by the piece.
Spain is now officially in the cold season, which still means sunshine & 20 degrees C. No regrets about moving here, none.
oi Dennis!
yeah I lived in North Brabant for a while, only good thing i can really say about it is it was v easy to get out lol. there was Germany, Belgium, the north of France. i remember Charleville as a v family-oriented little city, friendly but not smarmy and totally unpretentious. good rustic food if loads of butter don’t bother you. and yes the puppets! i never got to catch a show but the locals seemed super into it. i once overnighted as part of a road trip from NL to Spain and the hotel was nothing but Rimbaud kitsch, it was bonkers. sort of like being in North Korea, but Rimbaud is the huge all-seeing dude. also the bathroom and the bedroom were totally the same space which i reckon he might have thought was a neat joke or smth.
Vagabonds is a good one (honestly there are no bad ones), i really liked Gravity’s Rainbow by Pynchon, like i actually resisted it for the longest time bc my father loved it for a while but when i finally picked it up it sort of slapped. it’s been a long time so I’ll reread it and think of your George, who deserves it. maybe i’ll get lucky and he was into it and all.
i’ll hold for that Shy reedition then, it better happen soon, like! fucked that it hasn’t happened yet.
anyway say thanks to Zac for helping, omg. what an enterprise. bless your hands.
so many new bands to check out on this post! i’m currently a bit consumed w Rosalía (and right chuffed that we’ve got ~them~ trying to understand us and not the other way round for a change) but i’ll be doing the rounds for sure.
alright, lastly, if i were to send you a bit of my work, what would it be and whereto might i send it? i’m like totally blank here.
have an excellent one today (tonight?) <3
Any plans for the weekend? I’m leaving in half an hour to go see BLUE MOON.
I got the colonoscopy results back – the doctor says I have a clean bill of health.
If you slow down “You Suffer” by 500%, it morphs into early Swans.
Good Gig Day! I’d heard Lauten Der Seele on WFMU several weeks ago, but had not checked out their whole album. I just added Muscle to a punk set for my next episode of “Radio Not Radio.” Apart from these, today’s a great day for new releases, with Danny Brown’s STARDUST and albums from Kali Malone/Drew McDowall and Armand Hammer & The Alchemist.
