‘Elizabeth Taylor’s multiple personae–actress, vixen, Hollywood royalty, serial wife and divorcée, party girl, charitable humanitarian, entrepreneur, rebel, dominant woman–acts as a media-based mirror of contemporary female identity. For Kathe Burkhart, Taylor becomes a doppelganger in her paintings, in which tabloid, paparazzi shots and publicity stills from Taylor’s films are emblazoned with profanities that reclaim female sexuality and power. “I locate my position as oppositional on several levels: as a critique of representation, particularly that of women and also as a rupturing of idiomatic packaging/presentation devices,” notes the artist.’

Miriam Cahn fuck abstraction!, 2007-2022
‘A controversial painting by the artist Miriam Cahn was vandalized yesterday, May 7, at Paris’s Palais de Tokyo. Around 3:30 pm, a museum visitor removed a can of purple spray paint hidden in a medicine bottle and defaced the Swiss artist’s canvas. In a statement to Agence France-Presse, the Palais de Tokyo described the vandal as an “elderly man” who acted independently. He was apprehended by security agents and removed from the premises by police. The painting depicts a faceless man receiving fellatio from a smaller, kneeling figure whose hands are tied behind their back. Right-wing critics have claimed the scene depicts the sexual abuse of a child, but Cahn has maintained that it was created in response to reports of murder and rape committed by Russian soldiers upon their invasion of the Ukrainian city of Bucha last year.’

Shauna Born All The Boys I’d Like To Fuck, 2012
‘Freezing in time the fleeting beauty of life, and in particular the brevity and transience of youth, has long been a concern of visual art. It’s a natural fit, understandable, bordering on the obvious, that a medium like painting be used in such a way. The ability of painting and drawing to freeze a moment in time gives it the enviable power of making immortal (and timeless) the imagery it conveys. That which is portrayed in a picture stays immutable and constant while the rest of us poor souls submit to the humbling humilities brought about by the merciless elements of time, aging and gravity. The work of Shauna Born, who up to now has focused principally on youthful portraiture, is no exception to this described desire to make the world stop spinning. Her painted portraits of pretty young things ooze with a lightness of being. Ethereal and decadent, they often appear to be contemplating nothing more than their own fleeting existence, which in turn reminds the viewer of theirs. A momento mori minus the skulls-and-spook-show imagery.’

Hudinilson Jr. Cadernos de Referênci, 1979 – 2010
‘The artist Hudinilson Jr. truly transformed himself and his life into an ongoing record of his relationship with images. When he died in 2013, he left an apartment that could be mistaken for an archive, overrun as it was with artworks, magazine and newspaper clippings, notes and notebooks. He’d spent decades hoarding and editing thousands of fragments, many of which ended up glued to the more than one hundred and thirty Cadernos de Referência (Reference Notebooks), his name for the notebooks and address books of various shapes and sizes in which he worked daily. His process was singular—and nonlinear. Images clipped in the 1970s might be fished out and juxtaposed or overlapped with others selected in 2010; a page that had seemingly been finished for years could be reopened and filled some more at any given time. The limit was the utter saturation of every single page.

‘In the collages, sexually explicit images frequently coexist with news about the art world; posed portraits of local TV stars rub elbows with reproductions of religious artworks or shocking scenes of accidents and deaths. Each assemblage was guided by the power of attraction and contrast between the manipulated images. Leafing through these notebooks it is clear that, to this artist, images had a haptic nature that surpassed their referential significance or visual appearance. Images can be caressed, shaped, compressed or loosened; they have weight, taste, and consistency. One can play a synesthetic game with them, or a sensual one. This principle is inherent to Hudinilson Jr.’s practice, and that is why he was able to glimpse the act of anal penetration in a sequence of photocopies of a banana being peeled.’

‘For the neons, Bruce Nauman made sketches in pencil, charcoal and watercolour. For the figures, he used the outlines of the bodies of himself and his wife. The double outlines in different colours indicate where neon is to be used, and the layered figures indicate how they will appear when the neon flashes on and off. The primary colours red, yellow and blue are used for the male figures, while the female figures are represented in softer shades like pink, green and orange. The timing of the sequences is very important and is fixed and repeated in a continual loop, each figure having its own individual programme.’

p.s. Hey. ** _Black_Acrylic, Ricard was charismatic, for sure, charming and quite evil when he felt like it, which was most of the time (long story). ** Steeqhen, I’m so sorry to hear that about your dog. That’s so rough. I’m sorry. My rationale about that ‘God Jr.’ section is probably pretty technical, you know how I think. Thanks a lot for supporting my stuff with your friends. No, I haven’t heard the new Charli album. I’ll make a point to spin it. It’s not my normal inclination, but I am curious. That pop star realm you talk about is something I don’t know enough about to differentiate between them. I mostly just pay attention to what their angles are. The heat is pretty taxing, but I seem to be able to think and type thus far. Luck with your wave if you have one. I think you do? ** Tosh Berman, Hi, Tosh. There is apparently a documentary film about Rene in the works. The director contacted me a while back to ask if he could interview me for it since I knew Rene in the early 80s and Little Caesar was the initial distributor of his first poetry book. But I haven’t heard from him in a while, so I don’t know. Would be something though. Boy, he was colourful. ** Carsten, Hi. Honestly I’m not very knowledgeable about or interested in Burning Man, or not enough to have a heated back and forth about it. It’s more up your alley than mine. If the people who go to it enjoy themselves and get something out of it, that’s all that matters, and more power to them. I will say that constructing an ideal temporary city is what the Rainbow Gathering has already been doing since the 60s. The main difference is that it’s run by true believers, not corporate types, and it’s free, and they discourage electronics and phones so that people have to interact more personally and in the moment. I did out of curiosity check the demographics of the last BM. It was 68% white, 68.5% heterosexual. The average annual income of attendees was $80-99,999 with 22% having an annual income of more than $300,000. So it’s a mostly white, straight, well-off bunch. But, really, I don’t care that much, and I should watch that doc and get more of an insider overview before/if I say anything else about it. I was once in a solar eclipse in Amsterdam in the 80s, and everything went dark almost as night in the mid-afternoon, and the one here yesterday didn’t effect the daylight at all, so I was kind of disappointed. ** Adem Berbic, Danielle Steele? Actually I’ve never read her, so I have no idea what that means. Easy, compulsively readable with plot for days and a steamy tone? That’s a guess. I think we’re heading toward Croatia level heat today and tomorrow, so don’t move here until the weekend at least. ** James Bennett, Hey. Cool. The heat yesterday made me feel under the weather, so I just looked out my window waiting for the world to look shadowed, but it never did. So my only impression was ‘That’s it?’ Sounds like you got the best of it. ** Diesel Clementine, Hi. Ricard will take you into some interesting places. No, like I just said, I was feeling kind of bleh, so I just looked out the window and saw basically nothing. Oh well. I hope ‘MLT’ has more of an effect. And, you know, thank you. ** HaRpEr //, Me neither. Ricard’s poems are very good. Especially the earlier ones. Especially in his book ‘Rene Ricard 1979-1980’ if you can find it. Ideally you won’t have to self-publish your book, but at least there’s basically no stigma at all around self-published books anymore. Some of the most interesting books I read come that way. I self-published my first two books, and they lead to better situations. ** laura w, Hey. ‘Write from the scar not the wound’: what a ridiculous rule of thumb that is. Maybe the writing itself can be the scar? The eclipse was a non-entity, but that was my fault. Halloween can’t get here a fraction of a second too soon. ** Okay. Today’s thematic post surely needs no further introduction. See you tomorrow.

Hey Dennis. That Hudinilson Jr. archive is so cool, I always really like the combination of mass-market porn with high art. I think eliminating any kind of hierarchy of beauty or “worthiness” is the key to living happily, or at least only allowing a hierarchy of personal taste. Although it is always funny to see people dancing around the fact that some Renaissance paintings are meant to be sexy, at least to a sort of scary audience. The Betty Tompkins artworks are great too.

Hope you’ve been well. Finished Arturo’s Island, which was amazing, but really disturbing, I often had to put it down before bedtime to avoid nightmares. In hospital for a week or so, so I’ve been reading obsessively, haha. A lot of JD Salinger, which has been fun. I’m so lucky too, the hospital has a really nice-ish piano, but I’ve sadly had a foot operation, so I’m limited either to very anaemic Beethoven and Chopin, or Bach, who I don’t really like. I was enjoying Moonlight Sonata, but playing that without the pedal looks like one of those behind-the-scenes clips from a very CGI heavy film, inasmuch as you get the vague idea of what’s happening, but that’s it. Hope you’re well. Adios!

  2. Carsten

Well well, I did not expect straight porn to ever sneak its way into a post here but you surprised me once again, haha.

Yeah let’s drop the Burning Man discussion. We’ve each made our point & are now just getting into the weeds about an event neither one of us wants to attend.

I found yesterday’s eclipse underwhelming too. We had a total one in Germany in the late 90s that I remember vividly. Day turned into night & everything went dead quiet. I can still picture exactly where I was. Truly memorable. Yesterday the light dimmed to an eerie hue, but nothing spectacular. I also didn’t manage to get the special glasses, so I just briefly glanced in the sun’s general direction but kept my eyes away from the action for the most part. But yeah, what a difference those 5% make. Like I said, next year southern Spain is getting a total eclipse, so I’m curious to see how that’ll compare to the one from the 90s.

Just curious: how empty is Paris right now? I know you said that many of your friends left, but does the tourist influx even out the lack of locals or what’s the vibe in August? Our coastal region is overrun with tourists, especially the beaches of course. I must be turning into a local because I’m getting tired of it, haha. Just the drag of every place being crowded.

  3. Adem Berbic

I have been having to try very hard to stop myself from guffawing at the Brazzers one in the office. Could your œuvre not also be described as a gallery for bum-loving ticket holders? As monosyllabic English swear words go, I always thought “cock” had a special power, but then I’d say that, wouldn’t I?

You’re on the money, and it’s not my desired currency. Way too, hmm, twee and wistful (that sentence, not Steel). But I’ll continue to append and amend. There’s this whole thing about articulation and legibility I’m trying to do which is making everything feel not-necessarily-unwantedly high stakes. Maybe it’ll work, maybe it won’t.

I think it has shades of what you’d described of the run-up to starting the Cycle, where crystal was giving you all this sexual energy but stopping you from putting it out. Here it’s like that low mood is making me obsess about XYZ, but the fact is just that I don’t have much of an appetite for most kinds of physical pain, and so I’m trying to write this out of the surplus and out of that gap. Maybe we’ve been missing writers dressing up their mental breakdowns as high-concept Mallarmean encounters with le Néant. Who’s the last person who did that, Nick Land? Jeez.

There’s a production of Cleansed in London which T gave two thumbs up to, so I’ve parked my reservations and booked on. We were talking about his PhD proposal, which is around so-called transgressive literature and fascism. I think that’s a pretty plump topic.

  4. politekid

keep meaning to come say hello but these corrections are really doing me in. that’s my “fuck” to contribute to today’s post.

but quick drop in to say: i went to see that production of Cleansed Adem mentioned on monday. which was far far better than i was expecting it to be!! it’s directed by Rebecca Frecknall, who did a very successful production of Cabaret i never saw, but i had low expectations. i still had my problems with it…

[sorry Adem SPOILERS stop reading STOP READING]

biggest of which: alongside the really excellent physical theatre was a lot of terrible Physical Theatre. people reaching their arms out behind them in slow motion, rolling their shoulders backwards etc., if you know what i mean? the script is already dreamlike, so i think any production needs to be as realistic as possible to offset that. but the good stuff was very good. the hand removal was achieved by having the actor ball up his hands into fists then dunking them in a bucket of blood, which sounds a bit meh when written down but was surprisingly effective on stage. another v effective moment — a character’s body is pulled out of the room by invisible torturers, and the actor managed to make that look very real totally on his own. acting in general was great (something i rarely think in any context), esp. the main torturer Tinker, who played him like a brutal piece of shit rather than hamming it up. stage design was also excellent, it did really feel like a university-turned-concentration camp. lots of loud bass-heavy electronic soundscape — could have done with less of that, to be honest. the most effective musical bits were when they played music diegetically over a tannoy system, giving it a sort of Jonestown vibe. see my “as realistic as possible” comment above.

    — bottom line: the cowards didn’t have the rats carry away the severed feet as in the script. two out of ten.

a very notable production of it was at the National Theatre ten years ago, directed by Katie Mitchell, which i didn’t get to at the time. there’s a recording of it at the National Theatre Archives and its very tempting to turn up as a “researcher” to watch it. i still go back and forth on how great a writer i think Sarah Kane was — her reputation is so massive in regards to transgressive art in this country, esp. after she killed herself, that it’s almost impossible to get a clear view of her work. e.g. i often find her “romantic” aspects more cloying than bright or revelatory. have you seen any Sarah Kane irl? i remember you featured 4.48 Psychosis here before.

i also caught an exhibition of Wes Anderson props and costumes that same morning, which was a lot of fun. a tonally wild day.

    • politekid

here’s a filmed teaser for the production: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AEm73pcT9c i think you’ll get what i mean by both good and bad physical acting checking this out

      • politekid

see, even now i keep wanting to come back and qualify what i mean by finding her romantic side “cloying”. do i really think that? or maybe that’s important to the effect of her work? idk anymore! i’ll stop now

  5. _Black_Acrylic

Steve Poindexter – Work That Mutha Fucker was apparently a big influence on the Daft Punk guys when they heard this in the 90s, and I can really understand why. Something very modernist about the whole aesthetic.

  6. laura w.

i like the idea of writing as a scar… honestly a lot of great art has the impression of an exorcism to me. even/especially a failed one- the songwriter sufjan stevens attracted controversy a few years ago for saying that carrie and lowell was a failure because he made it believing that by doing so he would finally either understand something about his mother and her death and his relationship to her or if not understand than accept it, but it didn’t do any of that. i don’t know. there’s another novel, i read it last year, journey to the edge of life, that has that same sense, though i found it maybe liberating.

my instagram feed is all depressing french films now. and also gregg araki, which is bizarre considering that i don’t think i liked anything that would indicate i like araki films but i did have a long conversation with a friend on a totally different messaging app over the mysterious skin book vs movie (i think the movie is getting a 4k remaster or smth). it must be difficult to be a paranoid schizophrenic in 2026. do you consider the instagram police at all when you post or no? this post today feels directed at the heat, so i hope it listens to you and fucks off.

  7. Steve

Did many people in Paris watch the eclipse yesterday?

I agree with Steeqhen about MUSIC, FASHION, FILM. Charli has a rare ability to write about her experiences of fame without becoming insufferable. The album describes anxieties that are specific to her life, like starting out as an actor, but a lot that really resonate, such as realizing that your accomplishments aren’t gonna prevent eventual aging and death.

Are you planning to travel to California before Halloween to survey haunts? Have you read about any new ones?

  8. HaRpEr //

Today made me finally completely certain that we have in fact built hell on earth. It feels like it’s been summer about four times this year. A miserable day. I hope you managed to find some respite, anyway.

I love the Kathe Burkhart Liz Taylor series. I’ve been trying to track down her book ‘Dudes’ for a while now. Have you read it?

Yeah, there’s been some interesting self-published writing that Good Press has facilitated via their printing room which they can put straight on their website for distribution. They’re located in Glasgow, and weirdly, so is my nearest Publication Studio who have been the starting venue for a lot of greats who have gone on to take their book to a bigger press. They also make very beautiful books to own as objects. Unfortunately, I think they really want to talk to the author with the enquiry in person, which means I’ll have to go all the way to Scotland, which doesn’t seem doable at the moment. Their old London studio shut down. Anyway, there are options.
Thanks about your thoughts on self-publishing. I pray I don’t get to that point, but if I do it’s important to realize that that stasis isn’t the end of the life for a book, and that another publisher may still want it down the line.

  9. ⋆˚꩜。darbbzz⋆˚꩜。

    hello friend!
How profoundly perfect and beautiful it was today. How was your day? (Keep in mind, this first sentence is from Sunday)
I had what I think was a deep articulate conversation with my crush, giving them advise that they said was very accurate,
they gave me a hug as I got out their car and then I silently yet gushingly pointed out at the mushrooms (remeber the fruitful patches in my apartment yard I mentioned a week ago?) as I was walking a foot away from their car.
    .I …think…they like me?
They are anti-phone, (doesnt send memes, can take time to reply and replies shortly) and mysteriouss…BUT…the other day they giddily sent me a BJORK homogenic CD they got from the record store. Annnnnd then they ask every sunday typically if I want to go to the jazz jam with them. Other things aswell, haha. Gosh im blabbering about them sorry
Thinking of asking them “To go and eat” at this vegan diner I like aka a “date” and then maybe I’ll be vulnurable about my love since ive been working up vulnerability towards other things.

Oh remember when I was talking about confronting a friend? I think it went well, from my superficial view. They said they were greatful I feel comfforrtable opening up to them. it went great for what I desired as the best outcome
Two days ago I did shrooms and had a enlightening realization. Mother earth formed her fingers in the trees, from two leaves, shaped of a heart, in response to my innate feelings toward my friend.
I choose love! Forever and always. I love my friend and that is the approach I took. The thought that sparked, how poetic! during the cessation of a shroom trip, the outside fans stopped, and the cicadean night consumed me with my gradula cohesion in silent embrace of Earth.
I admit there were moments they “forgot” they said something that I certainly remember them saying well. To give them the benefit of the doubt, knowing my end goal is to communicate my feelings of broken boundaries and I really didn’t desire pointing fingers so I just said “Ya know I could be misrembering things too.”Sometimes I wonder if particular people in my life focus more on refining intellect rather than human connection.. Well anyways, in a way maybe it proves my point of their forgetfulnes but I will not dwell after today. Ahhh,,, how cathartic it was telling then!
Maybe im being full of myself, hmm..I admit maybe I have the opposite defect as my friend where instead of forgetting things I intensly fixate on events in my life…does…no one else do that?

    (Thursday)

Waiting on the train to London 😴
Feeling vvv muggy and stale over the past few days –potentially BC husband made me sick (but also maybe because I was out every night (but also maybe cause I sat in hot baths with jeans on three evenings in a row (but also maybe because I fucked with my meds a bit lol)) — I am resolute that I will be feeling better by first steps on Parisian soil.

Have been re-reading MLT ! On re-first impressions, it reads almost a satirical pastiche of a certain kind of young adult social realist fiction mostly found in libraries with like — a very ‘cool’ font and a picture of a teen in a hoodie. I did read a lot of these as a young kid and was always very invested in all the books’ hysterical ‘social realism’ (I took to Skins very well (have you seen Skins ? Surely)) but bounced very much off any whiff of didacticism. I feel like MLT is like one of these books from a world where adults stopped thinking there was any point in telling kids what to do.
It definitely feels like your most televisual novel; there’s a distinctly anti-‘literary fiction’ pulpy immediacy to the soap opera of it all –the unresolving dissonance of that and the tonal malaise is probably my primary propelling factor as I’m reading.

Hope this slips in before you write p.s. — I’m gonna try sleep — see you in Paris maybe — bisous !
