‘Though “happening” is a common and recognizable term in contemporary art discourse, it is lesser known that it was coined by American artist Allan Kaprow—another artist associated with Fluxus—in the 1950s. Of the numerous happenings Kaprow staged throughout his career, which nearly always involved audience participation, Household (1964) has become one of the most iconic of his oeuvre. A multi-part happening, the work involved covering a wrecked car with fruit jam, and some participants wiped up the jam with bread and ate it, while others licked the jam up directly from the car.’

Argentinian artist Eduardo Navarro’s latest series of drawings, inspired by quantum physics, is entirely edible. They are displayed under red heat lamps, like chicken eggs about to hatch. He’ll be cooking three nights during the exhibition, serving up three artworks each time. Each of the images illustrates the “holographic principle,” a concept in physics postulating that “information in the universe can only be scrambled but never destroyed”.

Researchers at MIT and Brigham and Women’s Hospital have designed and demonstrated a small, ingestible voltaic cell that is sustained by the acidic fluids in the stomach. The system can generate enough power to run small sensors or drug delivery devices that can reside in the gastrointestinal tract for extended periods of time.

‘Multidisciplinary artist Alison Knowles was an active participant of Fluxus—an international art movement defined largely by its emphasis on process over object—and of the vibrant and experimental New York art scene of the 1960s. In 1962, she performed one of her most notable works, Make a Salad, at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. In the piece, Knowles chopped vegetables to live music, dramatically tossed them in the air, and, once mixed into a salad, served it to the audience in equal portions. The work was revolutionary in its time, as it brought fresh, green food and the quotidian act of eating into the gallery space.’

Using individually wrapped pieces of candy and fish-shaped soy sauce packets, an anonymous trio of artists known simply as three have constructed a number of works that invite viewers to interact with them. Their installation titled Tokyo Electric displays a 3 meter-tall box designed in the scale of the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The structure deliberately includes 151,503 colorful fish-shaped soy sauce containers, which is the exact number of displaced citizens in the aftermath.

ÉCAL student Erika Marthins has combined a series of different technologies with food to create an interactive dessert that moves, makes noise and refracts light. Aiming to offer interesting alternatives to the average sweet treat, Marthins used edible robotics, light-shaping technology, and digital data information in the making of the dish.

Scottish artist Anya Gallaccio has created Stroke, which involves an entire room coated in chocolate which visitors are allowed to touch and taste. “The idea of a chocolate room is one thing and the reality of a chocolate room is very much something else,” says Gallaccio.

‘For An Edible Family in a Mobile Home (1976), Bobby Baker transformed the Acme Housing Association prefab that she was living in into a week-long sculptural installation that housed an edible family of five: mother, father, teenage daughter, son, and baby. Assembled from cake and adorned with icing, biscuits and other baked goods, the family members could be encountered in rooms throughout the house: the baby asleep in her cot, the son in the bath, the teenage daughter listening to the radio in her parents’ bedroom, the father slumped in an armchair in front of the television. The mother was the only mobile member of the family who moved throughout the house but was more often found in the kitchen, where visitors could enjoy a cup of tea from her head, or other soft drinks, and have fresh snacks from compartments in her abdomen. Against a backdrop of walls and surfaces covered in newsprint and magazines, and decorated with icing sugar, Baker performed as hostess. She offered food and encouraged visitors to consume, and thereby dismantle, the family.’

Precipitazioni Sparse (Scattered Precipitations, 2005) is a work of art by the Italian artist Bruna Esposito (b. 1960) composed of white, golden, and red onion peels placed randomly on a marble slab. There is no additional material applied to secure the peels to the marble. The artist calls this work an “impermanent sculpture,” since the onion peels can shift with the slightest air movements, creating continuous changes in the work’s composition.’

It took 56 hours to complete, was made from 4,640 chocolate sticks and 10kg of Belgian chocolate, measures 120cm by 120cm and contains 143,840 calories – but this edible labyrinth will only take a few hours to eat. The maze is the brainchild of YouTube vlogger Doug Armstrong, from London, and food artist Prudence Staite, from Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, who created their chocolate warren in homage to the Maze Runner film.

Was chosen to take part in an amazing art piece done by the artist Brandon McGill titled DUALITY. Was along with seven other young guys painted from head to toe very imaginatively with edible paint. This was followed by an art auction where invited guests bid on the artworks, meaning the edible painting not us. Those with the top bids could take us into private rooms and remove the artwork, which, yes, meant licking the painting off of our bodies. I was bought by a group of five men who had me back to a sticky version of my old self in what seemed like no time at all.

‘Song Dong’s participatory Eating the City (2017) after the audience began to consume (and apparently smash!) the biscuits layered to build the urban structures (leading to its collapse). The edible city is an amalgamation of a number cities, identified by a few iconic structures from Chinese cities, that the artist has created to represent the rapid growth, particularly in Asia, that has created urban areas, indistinguishable from one another, blending into sameness. The blandness and uniformity of the building blocks dangerously obscure their sweetness, and the artist warns against indulging in what the city has to offer. “If you eat too much then you could die.” In the end, the city is in ruins.’

A lumpy mound of a black rock-like substance dominated the space during He Xiangyu’s Cola Project. The substance was boiled down cola drink, a process developed by Xiangyu in 2008. With his team of factory workers, he “cooked” thousands of litres over a span of a year to create the crystal forms resembling coal. The work focuses on the materiality of Coca-Cola rather than the pervasiveness of the corporate identity of the product.

‘Swiss artist Daniel Spoerri, who died on November 6 at the age of 94, the chaotic mess of stained cloths, crumpled napkins, and food-smeared plates was rich material for art making. He began his “Snare Picture” assemblages in the 1960s, preserving the remains of meals consumed by friends, lovers, and strangers, before hanging them vertically on the wall.’

1. Put 5 Peeps in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave on high for 30 seconds. 2. Using a spoon, stir in about 1 teaspoon neutral oil until the mixture is stringy and combined. 3. Slowly stir in confectioners’ sugar until you’ve reached your desired consistency (we used about ¼ to ⅓ cup sugar). 4. Transfer the slime to a work surface lightly dusted with more sugar. A London-based patisserie is selling edible tampon, soaked in blood. Luxury macron brand, OhLaLa, are selling this one-of-a-kind ‘bloody’ delicacy for a good cause. The boutique bakers created the “world’s first Bloody Good tampon macarons to highlight a real issue for women around the world,” as stated on their website. They joined hands with Bloody Good Period (BGP), a charity organisation that aims to create a sustainable flow of sanitary protection for those who can’t afford to buy them. Thus, people who end up buying these gory tampon boxes will be contributing for the noble cause. Ten pounds from every box will be donated to “help the fight against period poverty that affects 1 in 10 women in the UK alone, with proceeds raised going toward buying period packs for asylum seekers, refugees and women with low income,” the website added. The artists made the tampon as real-looking as possible and even added a blue string, which the makers say is also edible and are made of raspberry.

“The domestic landscape reflects our culture, our taste and our habits,” say the designers Lanzavecchia + Wai. “Ostensibly living intact through good times and also adverse ones, the domestic objects become invisible to us over time with their familiarity. How can furniture react to times of crisis? The decorative elements that were once appreciated, suddenly become superfluous and should evolve to reflect a new era of austerity; the objects become edible and offer themselves to be consumed when needed.”

    Thank you for this tasty treat. The fragrance I’m wearing today is CDG 2 which I still maintain smells like candyfloss! Maybe I’m the only person who thinks this way. Here’s what the Fragrantica website reckons: “Top notes are Aldehydes, Angelica, Tea, Mandarin Orange and Mate; middle notes are Ink, Magnolia, Nutmeg, West Indian Bay, Coriander, Caraway and Cinnamon; base notes are Incense, Patchouli, Vetiver, Cedar, Amber and Labdanum.” Candyfloss to me and I really do like it.

    Re my brother’s trip to Dubai, he’s still there until tomorrow and the impression I get is that it’s Hellishly hot. Mum has seen some pics via Instagram and they show a city devoid of inhabitants, who are all cowering inside their individual apartment blocks with the AC turned up full. Anyway, he’s there for work not pleasure and I don’t suppose there’s too much fun to be had.

    Hey Dennis. That “DUALITY” piece is funny, what a concept. It’s so sleazy it sort of wraps around to being something more complicated. The butter sculpture is cool too, I like how much food art you put on our plates. I appreciate how you both platform traditional conceptual art and internet curio stuff, it’s a really nice mix of different fields that I don’t think I see anywhere else.

    Oh yeah, it’s definitely a weird experience. I originally moved out of my house in Hungary when I was like, 15, so it’s not as sudden a departure, but it’s definitely still spooky. Yes, I agree it’s weird to know you can’t go back inside your old home. It’s particularly weird when it’s a prefab-type of living (like my apartment complex, or maybe your part of LA), because you know the exact structure of your house is replicated everywhere around you. Super cool, I think. Anyway, hope you’re well. See you!

    Yeah, you’re not alone in that – I tend to fuck up when I use self-checkout, too. But then I also often feel like I’m weird as hell when interacting with real people in stores (or anywhere else), so… Maybe I should just have my groceries delivered, haha.

    Hmm. That’s a tough one. I had to think about what my favorite thing in my apartment might be. As far as furniture goes, maybe my bed – which is quite a big treat, then. What would be yours?

    Losing a handwritten novel sounds horrible. Sorry that happened to you. I’m lucky I learned my lesson about backing things up with a relatively small amount of lost writing.

    Food-based artwork is very offputting to me for some reason. I guess I’m grossed out by the thought of food textures outside of their usual context. The Super Mario cake is cute though lol.

    Catching up on all your great posts. I’m always disgusted by food used in non-food ways and people doing things like licking jam off cars, chocolate off walls, public salads etc so this was highly disturbing! Thanks!

    I guess I’m status quo out here, making poems, music and weekly newsletters which is a very nice status I’ve been having. 11 months sans booze and it’s been treating me well! It would be a lot harder to stay away from that past love if the benefits of a clear mind weren’t so glaringly obvious. OK now to catch up on some missed posts.

    This reminds me of the time I did a performance that involved “eating” a rotisserie chicken off of someone and then “playing” a harp made of raw ground beef. That might have been the day I first left a comment on here. I tend to interpret the slave posts as real until one of the commenters says something like, “I hypnotized this boy into being my sex slave and permanently disfigured his body.” But I also do find it very interesting to think that someone would project all these detailed fantasies onto a stranger. I’m sure some people on there are trolling too, which is probably the most boring possibility. Yeah, I get the sense that Sotos is very comfortable in his own obscurity and maybe even wishes less people knew about him.

I’ve missed you insanely, but I’ve been too busy with life and its many ups and downs. Currently working on three books and separating from my partner, though we’ll still be on good terms.     Just saw the news about RT’s French theatrical release on FB: congratulations!

    I spent the first day as an expat largely in zombie mode, due to the insufficient & mediocre sleep I’d been getting on the road. But the dominant feeling today was: finally. Reminds me of how I felt when I made landfall in LA. Which I never wanted to leave, but the nasty turn my divorce took pretty much forced me. Ever since then I’d been dying to escape. I tried awfully hard to make Munich palatable to my uncivilized soul for a while, but I just couldn’t do it. There’s something in the air in Germany that just irritates me to the bone. So being here in this wild & scrappy land feels both right & long overdue. The worst & messiest part of my family’s grief & turmoil of recent years seems overcome, so I’m looking forward to some well-earned peace of mind.

    I know you’re no fan of the heat & that travel for you is currently mostly film-related, but should you ever wash up around Malaga please know that my door is always open. The house I’ll be in for the next 10 months is pretty huge & has a guest room.

    I knew I’d end up on substack somehow, sometime. It seems like an interesting thing to experiment with. The notes part of the site feels weirdly corporate and like linkedin or something but I just need to follow the right accounts. I guess I was hesitant because I worried it was a fad, but it is of course a really good space for people to share their work, fad or otherwise. Anyway, I’m kind of finicky, same old same old reasons basically, and working like crazy. That is a perk, that I have a lot of time on my hands at the moment, even if it feels like it’s slipping away. Yeah sorry, it feels like I’m always venting about being a total mess, and I’m certainly better than I was earlier in the summer, but I’m having a weird moment and don’t know how to get out of it. That’s it. I’m actually okay though. I came across these random diary things when I was organizing some google docs and they were actually painful to read. I was rambling incoherently about the way Van Gogh shot himself in the stomach or something, but it was actually quite a relief to realise that I have some distance from that place now.

    Hey Dennis,

    Finally got my bag back today!! Felt like I was in some 80s movie set in the 50s with me running up to the mailman asking if he had a package for me.

    The whole food stuff is always a weird issue for me. As a child I had a teacher bring my parents in to ask if I was eating at home because I would never eat in school; that was because if I smelt or saw other people’s food that looked/smelt disgusting or even just weird to me, I would feel sick. I used to struggle to eat at friends’ houses too. I still get like that sometimes now, where I will try to force myself to eat something because my mind is telling me it is filthy and rancid, and I’ll just have to give up lest I gag it all back up. Ironic that this post is all about food, though thankfully I can admire it as art instead of worrying about having to get it down!

    I think I’m deciding to find a job and stay at that until at least December, and from then I can decide whether I leave or stay. I think I just need a good routine, which I am lacking at the moment. I met up with my friend and discussed a lot of that — we were in the library at UCC and I think that my student card still works until the end of this month, though I hope some mixup or mess happened with me repeating a year a while ago which has led me to have access to all these things for the forthcoming year!!

    I was telling my friend about that story, I was developing in my dream, and she seemed to find it interesting too. I can’t decide between taking it in a direction where it ends with the girl saying hi to the two narrators, implying everything they’ve said is actually their plan. Or having it be some strange more abstract thing, that will develop as I write. Probably the latter is best but keeping that ending in mind as a failsafe works too.

    Hey, well starting tomorrow I think will be my last comment until Monday. 3 years ago my sister decided on implanting a holiday called “Halloweenmas” where we essentially celebrate Halloween and give each other either insanely cheap but funny gifts or things we made ourself. I sewed my sister an eraserhead baby. If your comfortable I can send a picture through email if your ok with that but don’t feel obligated to say yes for whatever reason. Be prepared to see my very naturally serious face, I cut my bangs into micro size add shaved my eyebrows so the goth makeup looked better although I just so happen to be in the photo because it’s what I posted on my social media so apologies if my presence is a surprise because I don’t know if it’s common to see the faces of comments ever so often but the truth is I literally just share everything with anyone who cares

    Oh I met someone at a show who said they were also autistic and wanted to become a licensed therapist and that was so promising because they replied to my story the other day and I think it’s very likely I should say something to the degree of “do you want to go _____? Or I don’t actually know but I always go on whim.

    Earlier today as I was packing our neighbors daughter downstairs started pounding on her door and crying and I felt so bad because she had down syndrome and I could relate to that feeling as a kid in highschool just anguished to get home from the rotting sun and so I worked the courage and opened the door and wasn’t pushy asked if she wanted anything like water or to come inside with AC (and I didn’t want to seem creepy but also keep in mind I’m more of a feminine trans male so that sort of one-sidedness was less risky)
    But I text my mom who in turn told her mom,and the ring doorbell unlocked the door and it felt good to know that I guess I am capable of conjuring some humanity..
    I will stare into that Vegas globe! Will you be traveling anytime soon? No themed hotel sadly, but hells kitchen and the anatomy museum woo!

    My goal when I come back is to not be so verbose. I’m really trying on my end.

    Wicked post. Every time somebody says eatery I always think of something like Nighthawks so this is a great way of decentering that. Not sure I vibe with the duality piece, but that might be because of the oversaturation of naked body paint photography. I think your unpacked boxes are different because after a certain amount of time they become a part of the apartment. Maybe. Janet Jackson is in fact big for me. She’s up there with the elusive chanteuse Kylie Minogue. I feel like she was huge for me, then not as much for a few years in the middle when lockdown-related occurrences drove me insane, but again of late thanks to my incredible friend A., whose birthday letter is currently being written on my end. Had my blood drawn today for a test and been woozy ever since. The same nurse did it one time last year and I was woozy then too, which usually doesn’t happen so I’m guessing it’s either something she’s doing or some odd psychological association. She’s really nice, so that makes me feel ok about the whole thing. I shall sleep and wake up and be a-ok. Strange Things Happen at Night by Ashbery has been in my head all day, and now I’m attempting to extirpate it by writing out a bit of it. Would you ever return to poetry? I remember reading an interview where you said it was too easy for you to enjoy.

    Those bloody tampon macarons, wow. I could totally partake of one, and some of those body-painted boys.

    We finally had some hot weather over the long weekend, not conducive to catching daytime Crossroads screenings. I did see the live program; the Karl Lemieux/Daniel Menche piece had good moments but was a bit old-fashioned and a bit too long (as you might expect me to say).
