If you go really close and focus on the spot on front of your nose and then step back slowly and then tilt your head backwards and forwards: the painting looks as if it’s breathing. And it fills up your visio, and when you turn from the dull maroon to the brighter red on the painting beside, it’s like what that Groff guy says about being born. Perinatal Matrix IV. The two thin landscapes –with the light overhead and the soft glare of the paint– feel like god. And the whole of all of them feel like a womb and the square interior of the largest little brother in the world’s asshole.
I cried a lot looking at them but not in a try-hard Victorian cult-of-sensibility way I don’t think. I just like really large paintings a lot.

Ben Kingsley I actually ran into once at a AAA office of all places. Kudos to them for treating everyone the same, cause he had to wait with the rest of us. I still like Jarmusch a lot, though he hasn’t done anything exciting in years, & I did get quite a kick out of Spike Lee’s last couple of movies. Other than that it’s one-offs. “Lucky”, Harry Dean Stanton’s swan song, damn near tore my heart out.

Chatted with the owner & then basically befriended a Senegalese migrant, & somehow the natural, heartfelt rapport of that afternoon really lifted my spirits. We live in such ugly times now, politically & in the media, that there’s no greater antidote than spontaneous camaraderie. Hope your weekend was good too & hopefully less hot.
Oh & I saw mention was made here of George V. Higgins. Back in my early 20s when I read a fair bit of crime fiction he was one of my favorites. The first couple of books, starting with “The Friends of Eddie Coyle”, are a lot of fun. Pared down blue collar crime fiction told almost entirely in punchy dialogue.
would be very interested to hear your thoughts on illinois, obviously. it’s one of those staples of early aughts indie rock but aged much better than most early aught indie rock staples, at least in my opinion, mostly because it lives in its own world. he’s good friends with the guys from the national but we won’t hold that against him. lots of people dismiss him as the call me by your name soundtrack dude, unfortunately.
this weekend my instagram is back to knitting but also a lot of bunnies, like, pet bunnies, so very fluffy at the moment. i had guinea pigs and it upsets me how much in films and things they’re treated as disposal animals. they’re really very sweet and cuddly. i hope the heat breaks soon and i hope your algo gets itself on something actually of interest.
It’s interesting that the escorts are being stereotyped for intelligence to such an extent that a bona fide moron is like a rare jewel. Having a stupidity fetish is sort of confusing to me but maybe the fetish comes out of its scarcity.
This weekend I looked at the stack of books by my bed and said “fuck it, I’m finally going to read ‘Hogg’”. I guess there’s not a normal time to open that book. At first I thought it was sort of boring, repetitive, but the more I read it suddenly clicked. There’s lots of strange details and odd little lines that stick out that stopped me in my tracks. It’s so minimal and committed to what it’s doing that the mind goes to unexpected places and finds itself hallucinating something expansive, and then suddenly it becomes this book about a mass killer on the loose. Truly like nothing I’ve read. It sort of is like a sci-fi novel for the sexual part of the brain. There’s lots to dig at but it’s also sealed shut and is just what it is. It dismantles porn tropes like the ‘young innocent’ by its minimalism alone. Strange.
I totally get that vibe about people not being as they seem in photos. Sometimes, once you meet them in real life, it’s like the magic just fizzles out, right? It’s strange how that works. see here
Right? I feel like so many people put on an act online, and when you meet them in person, it’s like the enchantment disappears. It’s wild to think how a screen can change perceptions! I’ve noticed this with a few influencers I used to follow. Also, it’s refreshing to know I’m not the only one feeling this way. I keep a journal to help sort my thoughts on these experiences.
It’s interesting to hear someone say he’s not sexy at all in person, especially when celebrity photos can create such a polished image. I guess the reality check really hits when you see them face-to-face! This whole idea reminds me of how online personas often don’t reflect the real deal. For keeping it real, I like checking out reviews and forums for more honest takes on public figures.
I find it so relatable when you say that people don’t live up to their photos in person! Like, just the other day, I met someone I thought was going to be super charismatic, but it was just awkward silence. It’s always a surprise how reality differs from expectations, isn’t it?
