Today has been a struggle for me, but there have been some highlights. I watched Akerman’s Portrait of a Young Girl at the End of the 60s in Brussels today. Made me realise that there is this kinship I feel in how she navigates the language of isolation. Often you can see it contextualised within the power of heteronormativity and how that challenges the multiplicity of interiors. What comes to me is this equal lens on the success and failures of a kind of language that is being shared with others. It’s use changes dependent on the user, and I love how she engages with voices and the environments that occupy them.
Beyond that, I also watched Godard’s In the Darkness of Time. Took me some time to see it, but some recent feelings aided in me responding to it strongly. Before HRT I had struggled to cry, but now this is first film to take the honor in making me burst lol. Really, there is a strong poetic flair to how frames are contrasted against memory. Sometimes I think of the idea of how each second contains a multitude of changes within everyone. Whether these are realised or not doesn’t deny the occurrence. When I see Godard’s response to the past, I think of it as an attempt to capture the fleeting breaths that a made between these changes.
Lately I’ve been using a diary. When I visited York, I found a nice small book that’s been great to use. Recently it’s been used to capture my dreams. It seems that I have a better memory of my sleep in contrast to most people I know. Still, it’s creatively invigorating, and it informed a lot of my recent short story. Thinking of Godard, I wrote this:

Hi Dennis! I seem to have a talent for checking in on the blog specifically when there’s a new slave post up! More specifically it’s in the Emerald City wing, a sort of low security wing where inmates are a bit freer than in the main cell blocks.
There’s no real protagonist, there’s a few consistent characters the show will focus on, but by and large Emerald City *is* the protagonist. I write about it to you because it does not shy or restrain itself when it comes to portraying male sexuality in prisons – both consensual and non-consensual.
I’ll do my best to avoid major spoilers, but one of the primary characters in Oz, the closest it has to a main character, is Tobias Beecher. A lawyer with a clean criminal record who ended up in Oz after killing a little girl in a drunk driving accident. Within Oz he quickly becomes a “prag” (the penitentiary’s own word for bottoms, prison fags) for Vern Schillinger, a long-time resident of Emerald City and leader of the Aryan Brotherhood. After Beecher finally snaps on Schillinger in Season 1, a long, almost I Spit On Your Grave style revenge arc begins, back and forth between Beecher and his former abuser.
