A party intended to be a small gathering for friends saw 2,000 young revelers turn up causing over £400,000 in damage. 60 police cars were called in to deal with the shindig which had been promoted on Twitter using the hashtag #MansionParty. Parents of the boy who hosted the party said they had given him permission ‘to have a small number of people over’. However, after posting news of the party to social media, the house in Brampton, Ontario was flooded with young people who fueled by drinking, drugs, and deafening techno music, proceeded to destroy virtually everything in the house. One party goer called Nick, who claimed to be 16, said: ‘There were hundreds of people here. Some people were climbing over ladders, smashing the windows, and trying to drive their cars into the party through the walls’.

Superstar rapper 50 Cent’s mansion burned to the ground Friday – and his enraged ex-girlfriend, who was living in the house with their son, accused the entertainer of torching the $2.4 million Long Island home. Shaniqua Tompkins and two of her children, including the rapper’s 10-year-old son, Marquise, were among six people who fled the early morning Dix Hills blaze. “He tried to kill me and his own child,” Tompkins claimed, as she stood screaming outside the decimated mansion hours after the inferno. 50 Cent’s reps refused to respond to her allegations.

It’s been two weeks since this lavish seaside Mansion was beaten, smashed and burnt by angry mobs. Neighbours around the home say it was occupied by a nephew of former president Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali. Every day, several Tunisians can be seen at the home going through debris and taking pieces of the home, Sami Soukah says, “They stole the people’s money. We are not sorry that this happened.” Another angry Tunisian described the home as an “illegal building” built on “illegal land.” Today, the Mansion is just a shell with an infinity pool filled with debris, wide screen TV’s smashed, furniture charred, 30 Foot Floor to Ceiling Windows completely shattered and the smell of fire is strongly present. There is also a large amount of graffiti spread throughout the home including “The Rich got Richer. The Poor got Poorer” which can be seen on a wall in a marble tiled bedroom, which once had a jacuzzi. Another wrote “You killed the people, Ben Ali,” in the hallway overlooking the landscaped gardens which includes tropical plants and fountains. Many of the onlookers had never known how lavishly Ben Ali’s family lived, so when the Mansion was ransacked the people were shocked.

The film’s crew and designers spent months building the replica building in the middle of the English countryside to create the perfect mansion worthy of a secret agent. But in true action film style, nothing ever stays standing or intact for too long. And last night, James Bond’s countryside lodge in Skyfall was destroyed in a huge explosion as more scenes were filmed for the upcoming 007 film. The purpose-built mansion, made from plywood and plaster. Even though the house and the set were razed to the ground last night, Javier Bardem, who plays the movie’s villain, was asked not to light up in case he accidentally started a fire too early. ‘Javier loves his cigarettes and is always smoking on set to pass the time. The Skyfall lodge has been built in a field with some pretty dry grass, though. It wouldn’t take much for one of his butts to catch alight. They’ve had word with him and he keeps well away now when on a smoke break.’

$125M mega-mansion from Succession destroyed in LA fires: ‘The owner is 29 years old in 2025, bought the property in 2021. He used it to film shoots, and it was vacant and up for rent at $450,000/month when it burned. He never lived there! Plus, he bought it for $83 million and it never sold. Not sure why outlets are valuing it at $125 million just because he listed it. This was not a home. It was a real estate investment vehicle. Insurers and potential renters may be devastated; I just can’t be.’

These pictures are pictures of Steve Jobs’ mansion, which is now demolished. Jackling House was designed by the famed architect George Washington Smith, who was, among other things, credited with the Spanish-Colonial Revival style in the United States. Smith designed the home for Jackling, a metallurgist who went on to become an executive at the Utah Copper Company. Jobs lived in the mansion for ten years, and then rented it out until 2000, when he stopped maintaining the building. Despite a bitter battle with Uphold Our Heritage, who held the property out as a historic landmark, Jobs was eventually granted permission to bulldoze Jackling House, which he did last February.

The Batcave is history: A fire gutted the California mansion that served as the home of Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, in the 1960s TV series. “It was a fully engulfed inferno, for lack of a better term,” Lisa Derderian, a spokeswoman for the Pasadena Fire Department. said of the fire last night. The Tudor-style home on South San Rafael Avenue was 1440 sq m and sat on 2ha of land. It was being remodelled by the owners, Derderian said. The home also was used for filming other TV shows and films, including 1991’s Dead Again, which starred Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh.

Most people would be beside themselves if their home and prized possessions were destroyed in a natural disaster. But despite being ‘numb’ and ‘in shock’, former Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach tried to look on the bright side after his New Jersey mansion was destroyed by flooding caused by Hurricane Irene. Writing on Facebook , the metal singer said: ‘I have been holding on to my house. I just could not let go of the only home I had ever known. Well, God has other plans for me it seems. He has made His decision for me. My home has been taken away by an “Act Of God”. I just think He is giving me a much needed push, is all. The Luthor Mansion was the main estate of the Luthor family. It was Lex Luthor’s primary residence after he moved to Smallville in October 2001. A locked room on the third story in the east wing of the mansion housed Lex’s “obsession”: computer screens with a rotating CGI image of the octagonal key, wall paintings and murals from the Kawatche caves, Roger Nixon’s computer simulation of Lex’s porsche hitting Clark Kent on Loeb Bridge, an enlarged photograph of Clark’s face, a family photograph of the Kent family, an enlarged copy of Clark’s family tree that he transliterated with Kryptonian symbols, a large meteor fragment containing green and red kryptonite and a glass-encased carcass of a Kryptonian parasite extracted from the Katwatche caves. After Lex went missing in mid 2008, he selected Tess Mercer as his caretaker CEO to watch over his estate until he returned, but when she found out his true intentions, she declared him dead. After Lex died, Tess Mercer controlled the Luthor Mansion. She was temporarily held captive in the mansion by Major Zod and his army. Later, Lionel came from Earth-2 using a mirror box, and took over the mansion. The mansion was destroyed by a fire caused by Alexander.

In its Gilded Age heyday, it was the scene of lavish parties attended by the likes of Winston Churchill, the Marx Brothers and F. Scott Fitzgerald. But now Lands End, the grand colonial mansion said to be the inspiration for Daisy Buchanan’s house in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, is set to be torn down – because no one will buy it. The 1902 property, set in 13 acres on the tip of Sands Point, Long Island, is slowly crumbling and costs $4,500 each day to maintain. David Brodsky, who bought the estate with his father Bert in 2004, has had the dilapidated mansion on and off the market for several years, but has never found a buyer for it. Now he plans to demolish the house, valued at $30million, to make way for Sands Point Village, a community of five custom-made homes which will cost $10million each.

p.s. Hey. ** jay, Hi. If only someone had filmed when I had my head cleaved open with an axe when I was 11, I’d share it with you. I was in a daze at the time, but I suspect the blood spurts were pretty wild. When I first found the Kresnik play there was a video of it, but someone took it down, alas. It is a bit of a war at the top between ‘Benny’s Video’ and ‘White Ribbon’, it’s true. It wouldn’t have been too hard for your weekend to win the contest, and I hope it did. ** Carsten, Amen to that. I have very burnable skin. I was twice hospitalised with very bad sunburn when I was a teen, so I’m pretty cautious. And hats look weird on me. My head’s too big. I like Marseille. It’s the least French French city, visually. It’s pretty rough and worn down. Buildings spontaneously collapse there rather frequently. I wouldn’t want to live there, but it’s an interesting visit for sure. ** tomk, My pleasure, yay. I’ve only seen Banyan trees in Hawaii where they’re reasonably common, and, yes, they’re wild. Good, you’ll have company for the readings. That should help with the nerves. Is the DC site still down? Grr. The person who does it told me it would be back online months ago. I’ll go badger him. I guess jay found the interview for you if you didn’t see the reply comment. ** Bill, Cool, thanks! No, I don’t know Kresnik’s work at all. I’ll ask Gisele. My ideas are still pretty vague, but, yeah, it’d be interesting to confer about that. The meaning killing is kind of the big problem for me. I’m old fashioned or something enough to want meaning. Or, well, only in things I make myself. I hope the extension acquiesces to you in time. But, if not, you’ll know what to do. ** Tyler Ookami, Very true, I think, re: prog rock vs. math rock. I could get into math rock recordings, but whenever I saw Tortoise, etc. live it always just seemed uptight wanky. Amazing about that Warhol/Morrissey dump. I just peeked, and there are things I thought I would never get to see. Thank you! Everyone, Via Tyler Ookami: ‘Someone has put a ton of Warhol/Morrissey material in a big folder on Archive: here, including Lonesome Cowboys, though the image quality is not great (it seems to be ripped from video), though also I suppose it is better than not having it at all. It’s very scattershot in terms of what looks optimal, though Soap Opera and Chelsea Girls look far better than I have seen elsewhere! Very interesting that a majorly influential filmography is inching towards being available after, in some cases, not being seen for half a century.’ Incredible score! Thanks again!!! ** Misanthrope, David, David, David. Once we finally get a gig for ‘Room Temperature’ in NYC, I’ll go for that. I supposedly am going to do a reading there at the beginning of December, so maybe then if nothing else. ** julian, Blood lives too briefly once plucked, like avocados. I think the far right conspiracy theories flying all over the place are without pleasure or interest whatsoever personally. Give me ‘Paul is Dead’ over that any day. Okay, the rich NYC folks is a drawback in theory, yeah, but still. ** horatio, What kind of theater did you used to do, and why did you stop? Thanks. And for reading ‘Guide’. Yes, that title was a disguise of the actual title. I can’t remember why I did that though. There’s a lot of disguising in the novel, as you saw, so I guess it was just part and parcel of that. Yeah, of course, about after the event or whenever. Thank you! It’ll be really nice to meet you. I’ve been fine, just the usual work and stuff. You? ** Steve, Hi. Yes, that’s an actual body (the artist’s) in FINISH’IT. I hope your doctor gives you what you need today. New show! Everyone, Here’s Steve: ‘My latest “Radio Not Radio” show is now up on Mixcloud: here. This one features several artists I learned about from your Gig Day, among many others: Ensemble Nist-Nah, Gnaw, Gila, Pharaoh Overload, Major Stars, Vesta SA, Halima, Deekpaz, Nadeem Din-Gabisi, Amaarae, Asa Bantan, Purity Ring, Tropical Fuck Storm, Black Eyes, Guerrilla Toss, Eye Ball, Witch Club Satan, Ritual Mass, Abhorrent Expanse, Nina Nicolaiwesky, Ethel Cain, Whitney Johnson/Lia Kohl/Macie Stewart, Nina Garcia, Harlem River Drive, Chicago Underground Duo and DJ Narciso.’ ** _Black_Acrylic, Nice: the Simons/Ruby collab. ** Dominik, Hi!!! Cool. The film is pretty much the Sword of Damocles right now, but in a mostly good way. Strange about the death of the smell. But dogs know things we don’t, so that’s spooky. I think My Chemical Romance is on tour, no? Coming near you, I hope? Love being gifted with a universal mansion fire damage insurance policy, G. ** HaRpEr //, It’s a little joy, that Sean DeLear book. Yes, that book series that David’s and Nayland’s/my books were part of was a fantastic series. Lots of excellent things. The books were gorgeous. I wish they’d reprint them. The Warhol/Morrissey dump is amazing, yeah. To be able to see ‘Batman Dracula’ even in shitty shape is remarkable. Really good luck with the move. I hate moving so much, but then it’s over, and then you forget. ** Steeqhen, Yeah, that definitely qualifies as a tough weekend. So sorry, man. Concerts can work miracles if you want them to. Thanks a lot about ‘PGL’. And the things you saw in it. Much appreciated. I hope the week erases the weekend. ** Darbzzzzz, Howdy. Kind of intense about the cutting and the timing with the post. That might have made me ‘see’ it more than I normally would have or something. Old Navy, okay. I wasn’t sure if that place still exists ‘cos I’m here where it never existed. Or maybe it did at some point, I don’t know. That’s good. Islands: Yes, the Hawaiian islands, and … Iceland, Catalina (off the coast of LA), a few in Japan, … that might be all. I’m sort of over real sex. Too much trouble. I did see that Reznor thing. It’s hilariously dreadful, haha. Have a good to great week, okay? ** Nicholas., Oh, I was overly judgey about vaping. Whatever works. It just doesn’t look very … suave. You’re going to Fire Island. I always stayed at friends’ little houses there. Fire Island and I were like oil and water, so I don’t have any tips. All my tips would be to avoid the things that you’re going to do there and find exciting. So I’m useless. I haven’t had a treat lately. I’ll try to find one today though. ** Corey, That could make you a friend or two. Excellent about the event success, etc.! I haven’t read Hart Crane since I was assigned to read his stuff in high school. I have no memory of his work at all. It could be great. I feel like nobody in the States at least read him anymore. Except maybe in high school? But I don’t know. ** ellie, Hi, ellie! How good to see you. I’m good enough, how are you? Jeanne Dunning, yay! Thank you! Everyone, ellie made a fine add to the Bloody weekend, a work by the excellent artist Jeanne Dunning, and it’s here. Take care, pal. ** Okay. And today you get the sequel to ‘Ex-Mansions’ whether you like it or not, haha. See you tomorrow.
Hey Dennis,
How are things? I’m intrigued by the December NYC reading – can you share any details? I’ve been meaning to go visit a friend there for a while now. It would be dreamy to make the two coincide.
I’ve just started the Ashbery/Schuyler collab “A Nest of Ninnies” and it’s a lot of fun.
On a not unrelated note, I’ve been thinking about the fact that the British writers you like often seem to specialise in offbeat social comedies (a dark mood executed with a light touch). I find that a really interesting influence on your work, one that wasn’t obvious to me until it was, and then it’s like “oh of course!”
It’s helping me think through things in relation to my own writing. I feel like in some quarters the dark avant-garde sex-heavy stuff is priveleged as the true subject of ambitious literature. And while I love it and it’s definitely an influence, I think I need to figure out a way to use it as one ingredient among many others, not the main one. I’m thinking out loud here. Would love to know if anything occurs to you on that topic.
The whole burgeoning publishing adventure combined with getting laid off and subsequent job hunt really fucked my writing routine lately… but I’m hoping to get back on track soon.
Bisous,
me x
I would love to have a mansion just to destroy it.
Meanwhile over here Mum is selling our childhood home, not a mansion but the only house she’s ever lived in I think. The aim is to move in with her boyfriend over in York which everyone is ok with. York is less than an hour away from me so it’s not too much of a wrench.
Saw Weapons last night and I can exclusively reveal that my opinion = it’s quite good. I do prefer Barbarian though, which is just one person’s take. I’m thinking you might possibly like these films in that they do something interesting with their structure. There’s a non-linearity to them which is innovative for mainstream cinema.
Hey Dennis! Yay, this is so much my kinda thing. If I could include one extra thing, I’d maybe add the collapsing house special effect behind-the-scenes from Poltergeist, it’s worth looking up. #MansionParty sounds awesome, I wish I was around for that. The Roblox thing is cool too, I think liking buildings and houses being destroyed is a pretty universal childhood thing – I remember begging my parents to take me to the demolition of a tenement near me, haha, and when they wouldn’t take me I ended up making intricate cathedrals out of wooden blocks and destroying them. I’m at my childhood home atm, so I may see if I can find a photo of one of them, I remember them being weirdly intricate.
Oh yeah, I forgot about your axe accident, I bet that was spectacular, in a really awful way. You’ve definitely got a really interesting life. It’s sad the Kresnik play is missing, but from the sound of things, the concept is stronger than the execution, so maybe it’s more satisfying for it to only exist in description and stills. Anyway, sorry to hear your weekend wasn’t award-winning. I’m probably going to see an ex for coffee, given that I’m in the area, and maybe start “Sorrows of Young Werther”. Best of luck, see ya!
Hi!!
The Sword of Damocles but in a mostly good way – I can see that. Any news about the German festival?
Yeah, My Chem is on tour. We’re currently waiting for them to announce the European schedule. They’re one of those rare bands I’m willing to travel for, so we’ll see them one way or another. Hopefully right here in Vienna, though, just to make things easy.
That’s very useful – if love happens to own a mansion or two! Pool boy love working in tiny swim shorts in your mansion’s garden, Od.
Hey Dennis,
As someone who lives in a country without many natural disasters, I find all the ways a house can be destroyed really enticing. One of my favourite things as a child was to play with my friend’s sisters dollhouses and make up end of the world scenarios where the house was being ravaged by tornadoes and earthquakes and everyone dies. My house did flood, though, in 2012, which was a really strange occurrence; i slept through most of it thinking the water was someone showering.
I’m trying to watch some of the videos but the shitty train wifi is not allowing it. The images/gifs can work for now! There was a mansion that I used to drink in a lot during 2020 with my friends; it was abandoned and we spent most of the time in the opened wine cellar dungeons, but one day some guys broke open one of the metal covered windows and we spent the weekend drinking and smoking inside. There was a room with a powered on computer connected to a bunch of cameras, which felt like something out of some 00s horror movie, and on the Sunday the police came and made us leave. It was a shame as fences were put up to stop people going there, and i feel sad for the younger ones who will never get to drink and loiter there.
Feeling a lot better today, despite sleeping in and having to book the next train. September starts on a Monday, which has me hopeful for ‘new beginnings’ and all that jazz.
One thing I wanted to inquire about was if Roman in PGL having his bike injury was inspired by your own experience with that axe? Also I loved how it all was shot; you and Zac did a great job with that. Has me excited to watch Room Temperature. I wish I had my laptop or owned an ipad so I could watch a movie on this train ride, but I don’t, so I have to make do with the tough decision between reading a book or listening to a podcast. It’s a constant daily battle of mine!
Welp, on the bus back from the concert. Had a great time and then my bag was either stolen or mistook by someone, so now I’m down multiple possessions, my wallet, my keys, and I had been so excited to spend this 3 bus time ride home playing my 3ds…
Guess someone out there wants me to kill myself!! I seem to be having the worst time of my life, where nothing good can happen without something ruining it.

Oh I’m loving this for a bunch of reasons. The closest I ever got was wrecking my apartment in Hollywood. I was a model tenant for a year. Always am. Kept the place clean, even fixed up some things like the faucet in the bathroom out of my own pocket. In the meantime I had met the wife & we were planning to move into a bigger pad together. Told my landlord about my plans to leave & he said, unprompted by anything, that he would withhold my entire deposit to cover the damages he was sure I’d done to the place. I thought I was hallucinating. I suggested we do a walk-through right then & there, to show him how spotless the place was. Nope, no interest & no deposit. Well I immediately sent out an invite to a wrecking party, where my friends & I proceeded to throw knives, smash glass and most fun of all: attach pieces of paper to the ceiling fan, light them & turn it on. The movement fans the flames & at a certain speed fireballs come shooting down. I know some would call this petty revenge. I maintain to this day the bastard had it coming.
Oh shit, OK, if you’ve had sunburn that bad I understand the need for sunscreen. To shamelessly quote from one of my own poems: “call the sun your brother but don’t put all your trust in him”
Buildings spontaneously collapse in Marseille? How fitting in light of the ex-mansions. It’s the rough & unkempt aspect of the city that’s attractive to me, so I think I’ll visit some time next year.
Formatting question for Duende Day: the post as a whole is going to be a steady stream of image & video followed by bits of text. For design purposes I’m pasting the images right into the docx file, but once I send it over to you you need those images as attachments, right?
To be more specific: in addition to pictures as attachments, do you prefer the actual image pasted into the docx, or should I just indicate the place each should go (with something like “IMAGE: name of the photo” in the text)?
*Poof* Funny enough haha that’s the best advice! Ive really realized I have all my answers and If im inspired to do something there’s an intuitive reason past that I must follow! So yeah really good stuff haha. Hum did you I ever I feel like you must’ve look at your parents or anyone who was tryna tell you how to live your life and realize you didn’t wanna be anything like them whereas most people may be inspired by. their parents I am inspired to live freely and openly and empathetically and they seem to be of an age counter to that but your decades older than both of them and a freak like me so its not age or generation thing maybe? I guess it’s just called considering the source haha something I’m new to, my child like naivety has tuned into rock hard genius after much effort wearing rose colored glasses. I truly believed everyone had my best intentions and at the least their own In mind and was super smart like me for ever! And most people don’t even get to COMPREHEND Let alone LEARN half of what I have in the first quarter of my life and if they do they don’t get to as leisurely and sexy as I do haha so ill just say im charmed/blessed/grateful and always consider the source! My question turned into declaration haha sorry! Go to Paris chipolte for sure it should be really fun get extra guac too. Hum I’m gonna read Wrong and Flunker and actually finish them! How do you feel about short stories compared to books? More fun and hum wait I asked before is the Dennis Cooper literary universe singular or a Mutiverse? As in is one time line all your books take place in just different times and places and people or is it more in these different universes these events are happening and reflections of souls blah blah etc? I know you might have thought about that before haha and it makes up for my tangents ttylxox brb.
Following Morrissey’s death, access to his work has opened up. Some of the videos on the Internet Archive were also posted to YouTube. Blu-Ray releases of his ’80s films are in the works.
Someone mentioned Frost Children here last week. I’m currently reviewing their new album. It’s great fun, although the EDM/early Internet nostalgia might grate on some.
My doctor’s office didn’t know what’s happening, but a friend suggested that I’m having hot flashes. I’ll call them back tomorrow and see what they think.
Hello today I did writing and some crafting, I’m trying to make a batch of patches to sell online, and maybe sell some clothes I’ve altered because I like augmenting “meh” clothing into something cooler but it’s still a somewhat new/developing hobby.
They are building a new veterinary hospital near where I work and the other day some drunk driver drove into something leading to a large explosion and fire, I think some firefighters got badly damaged. Well I see it every time I walk to work and it’s truly breathtaking in a haunting way, like some apocalyptic building, broken scaffolds, obliterated walls and thankfully no animals were inside. Can you imagine that?
Old Navy is aight. I guess.
Today is ok. I was walking home and it started raining and it was the most marvelous thing because it turned so cool outside and I was listening to shoom by TR/ST and everything was just cathartic, the way the universe just released itself (like the pissing universe)
Can I send you an email/photo of that burlap hand stitched doll that was never sent to you? I finally found a photo, although it’s not the final product photo, it will do so you get an idea.
I’ll probably not get to respond by the end of the week but I’ll send it. I’m very tired this week. Yawn.
My mum grew up near L. Ron Hubbard’s mansion, the UK scientology hq. I’ve driven past it a few times and it gives me the creeps. It looks like a little castle with a garden and terrace like ‘Last Night at Marienbad’. Also in that area Led Zeppelin purchased a mansion that supposedly contained all of this satanic ephemera. Weird neighbourhood.
I watched ‘Soap Opera’ from the Warhol dump which I loved. It was interesting, because generally, if a secondary source is used in his films it’s because his actors are re-enacting parts of their favourite movies, so it was really cool to see him with the approach where a lot of the film is taken from stuff on tv. I also watched this really wonderful Holly Woodlawn interview and a clip of the exploding plastic inevitable just called ‘Velvet Underground’ which I was ecstatic to see. No sight of any small snippet of ‘Four Stars’ though. If I get the chance to see a glimpse of that one day I might explode into a cloud of glitter.
I got really obsessed with Hart Crane as a teenager and then tried to write like him which was stupid and impossible so I stepped away from him and don’t return to him that often to avoid trying to copy him by mistake. I’ve had to do that with a few people. Don’t know if you know what I mean? He’s really great though and still has a special place in my heart, even just to think back on how he inspired me. It sucks what they do to the greats in high school and even college. They try to turn interesting uncategorisable people into patriots and conservatives.
Sad to see so many beautiful houses destroyed. But I guess it’s better for a rich person to lose their home than someone who can’t afford another one. Yeah, I see what you mean about the far-right conspiracy theories. It seems like almost every conspiracy theory got absorbed into Q-Anon around 2020. I will say though, the idea that the world is run by Satanic pedophiles, while probably not true, could be exploited to make some pretty interesting art if you take it as pure fiction. Have you seen Eddington? Ari Aster kind of scratched the surface with that movie, but I think it could be taken way further.
What’s up Dennis! I’m back again finally. Life has been busy.
Something about the destruction of houses makes me really melancholy. Not sure why, I guess I’m just the type of person who gets attached to buildings. I like the idea that the houses I’ve lived in still exist even if I can’t go inside them anymore, lol. That Toronto house looks cool as hell. Very sad.
What’s your favorite Muriel Spark book? I think I remember you said you liked her. I read one of hers for the first time a few months ago (The Only Problem, because it happened to be at a local used bookstore) and it was a lot of fun. Would like to pick up another one sometime.
Hello!
I wasn’t going to comment today has I felt I had nothing to add, but I had some questions I could not wait to ask you so I apologize if my comment is slightly long today. Also this post was awesome and made me think about things I never take the time to consider (the end of mansions wow). Please feel free to ignore all questions if you don’t want to answer.
Still slowly working my way through your non fiction collection. I am curious as you have experience interviewing others, what it feels like when you are interviewed? Do you find yourself, maybe not so much critiquing but maybe thinking to yourself “I wouldn’t have asked that”? I feel I wouldn’t be able to take the interviewer out of myself as I often redirect conversations back to the other person. I love to ask questions unfortunately. Also have you been denied an interview and then happened across that person? Was it awkward?
In regard to your filmmaking (I am very excited to check out after your novels) was collaborating hard? Are you and Zac very much on the same wavelength where you often agree on things? Would you ever work on a solo film project or is part of your joy of filmmaking that you get to work with Zac?
Also I started reading a book recently that was blurbed by another author I find interesting. The book turned out …. god awful, hahahaha! But I was wondering: are you often asked to blurb books? I think I saw a book or two compared to your work and they also failed to make any lasting impact. Have you ever found a comparison borderline offensive?
Again I apologize for the million questions, I find the more I read your work the more I want to know. To answer your question about how I was spending my last “free days”: I binge watched The Good Doctor (US Version). A show about autistic surgeon, if you didn’t know. Admittedly not a good show (or even a show I enjoy honestly), but one I have myself deeply attached to and cannot stop watching. What was the last thing you watched? I also spent some time brainstorming some sock ideas for you! I have given up hope I will find a perfect yarn that will not affect you, but is cotton better, worse, or the same as wool for you? Do you think Zac would like some socks too? Matching best friend socks?
I think I am feeling nervous for my first day tomorrow, hence my long comment. But if I don’t comment again this week: have a fantastic rest of your week and a beautiful weekend, Dennis!! ⸜(。 ˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝♡
Also I said it on IG but I must stand up for that Reznor cover! I am a proud defender ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ
Hey Dennis! Cool post today, the old roblox clip made me feel nostalgic. You ever play any of the games on there? I was totally obsessed with them growing up. Its interesting how much the site has changed in recent years, the company has made developments that make it more accessible for all ages, but in turn have made it less safe for the target audience. There have been like… roblox “cults” that have sprung up in recent years- its pretty fascinating but way creepier than anything I would’ve anticipated from the game when I was a kid.
I used to do whatever plays and musicals my school would put on, plus the occasional community play or summer camp workshop. I actually studied theater in college before switching majors, I guess I stopped because COVID made me realize the limitations of the medium in a very immediate way. I’m not opposed to doing theater again, though, Connie has been looking for performance artists for her Gay Church project and I’ve been contemplating putting together some sort of skit inspired by Story of the Eye, but nothing is set in stone.
That’s good to know about Guide, I’ll make sure to add that to my annotations- and that’s excellent to hear about meeting you… I’ll be sure to put together something nice :^) I’ve been mostly well, I had a 3 day long hangover last weekend but I got a job offer during that time which is nice. And I’m thinking about writing zines under an alias… If I follow through with that I’ll let you in on that secret haha.
Hope you have a wonderful day!
hi dennis! i’m okay, i just finished my year at saic, so i’ve been moving and reconnecting a bit with people on the east coast. cigarettes are so cheap here! there’s also a book i’ve fallen really in love with called the faerie devouring, it’s great to read at night with all the bug sounds. are you mostly doing room temperature things?
I can imagine Tortoise not being the most exciting thing live. I think in terms of that cluster of punky neo-progressive genres, it’s less the lack of excitement in a live setting for me and more that it relies on replication in a way that’s not very interesting.
Having watched Lonesome Cowboys, I don’t quite know what to say about it since it is so outside of what makes a film successful, even within the experimental sphere, even within that group of actors and directors but at the same time it feels like just watching something happen. It really transcends the irony/sincerity, reality/performance, or what “good” filmmaking means. It’s kind of hard to explain what makes it worth sticking with. What do you think about watching Chelsea Girls outside of a theater setting? Almost everything I’ve seen written about it seems to focus heavily on how a theater audience processes both the duration and where to draw their attention toward the screen.
