The album was produced by Mike Bridavsky, better known as the “dude” of the late online-celebrity cat Lil Bub, but Deerhoof’s air-quotes “studio debut” doesn’t so much smooth their scruffy charm as sharpen it up. ‘Schobbee is film editor and composer Rik Chaubet. Poe’s Law is an album of internet audio gargled by film editing software. The result is a torrent of in-the-red glitch, digital concrète and corrupted beats like a GIF turned necrotic. Its name comes from what Wired magazine, in 2017, dubbed the most important phenomenon on the internet. ‘Poe’s Law’ is, to paraphrase, the inability to detect online whether someone is being serious. Grasping at the difficulty in detecting nuances like sarcasm and irony in cyberspace, the idea resonates with longer running philosophical musings on the distance between intention and interpretation. For all of Hunt-Hendrix’s theorizing, though, the music has always been thrillingly physical. It’s one thing to read about her concept of the “burst beat” and how her rapid-fire rhythms are intended to induce a state of awakening and transformation. Is Pollard looking for new Guided By Voices fans in 2023, or is he continuing to move at this pace in order to regain access to the Guided By Voices fan within himself? I did see ‘Bullet Train’ on my flight I took to LA to make the film. I think I thought it was fun enough and helped make the time pass. I don’t remember it so well though. I liked it more than ‘Dune’, which I saw on my flight back here, but I didn’t like it as much as ‘John Wick 4’. Why do you ask? Ha ha, nice love. Nice love is a rare treat. Hm, just being out in the desert for six weeks was pretty strange in general because some very odd people choose to live out there. And having a film shot in their hood was unusual enough that a bunch of them kept showing up to watch, meaning a posse of excessively tanned, very drunk people were often standing around partying at the end of the driveway of the house we were shooting at. The plan is that Zac and I will put together a cut of the film that we’re happy with on our own. Then we’ll go into a studio with a pro to help us finesse things we can’t do ourselves. Like the ‘ghost camera’ sections are going to need a lot of knowhow and work to function properly. Then we’ll either finish the edit with the pro or on our own. Then we’ll get help to do the color correcting and sound. I have no idea how much footage we have, time wise. A lot. We have a structure for the film firmly in mind, and it’s pretty set, but no doubt we’ll fiddle and move things around a bit in the editing. What did your doctor recommend re: the Klonopin? I too have seen only a couple of Ottinger’s docs, and, yeah, I don’t remember thinking they were amazing or anything. Everyone, Three new reviews/pieces by Steve for you today. Generally when I write to music, I do keep it pretty low because my brain is such that I tend to start prioritising the sound over my imagination. What kind of sounds are you finding most helpful to the writing? Even though what we shot for the film exceeded even my hopes and expectations, it still seems to be the film we had envisioned. But, yeah, since we shot the film wildly out of sequence, we really won’t know how it works or how it should best work until the editing. That’s where the film happens really.
